Discussion 1; Situational Awareness

From this video, it is evident that a person’s peripheral vision is sensitive to motion. However, it is even more sensitive to objects and therefore motion might not be detected in a situation presented includes a movement within a movement like presented in the video. This is the same case that applies to the fire-fighters’ situations when they are putting out the fire. Therefore this means that the fire-fighters have to be very keen and look out for any signs of a difficult time when they are trying to put out the fire to prevent them from being succumbed. The peripheral view also has a limit to what is can be seen and it can be said to be around 180 degrees. Therefore the fire-fighters need to be aware of this and use it to their advantage by monitoring their surroundings. However, the most useful vision is the direct view which can determine the direction of movement of the fire and therefore acts accordingly.

Discussion 2; Risk Factors

Fire-fighters are associated with different kinds of risk factors that affect them. Some are intrinsic while others are extrinsic. These risks include physical dangers, mental anguish, post-traumatic stress disorders, and unstable work-life balance. Physical dangers and unstable work-life balance are stated as the extrinsic risk factors while mental anguish and post-traumatic stress disorders are the intrinsic risk factors. Even though these risks and issues are difficult to manage a fire-fighter can make sure that he/she takes the work positively and being motivated by such things as saving lives may make the fire-fighter take the risk factors in a better manner and deal with the challenges lightly. Another way of reducing the effects is making sure that he/she is ready to work at any time. This means therefore there will not be a lot of difficulties in case the fire-fighter gets a call for work.

Discussion 4; Residential Fire Sprinklers

Residential sprinklers are a new concept and several individuals are for this concept. It is the process of installing sprinklers inside the houses whereby there are residents of people and therefore protecting them from fires in case it happens that the house gets fire. This is a very good practice since with the sprinklers there will be less hurry and attention from the fire-fighters needed since the sprinklers will be used immediately a fire breaks out and therefore making it safer for the residents of the place to get out of the building with ease before the fire department arrives. However, this system has its challenges. First of all, it is not 100% guaranteed that they will work effectively especially with large fires. Secondly, they are expensive for some people to install and there is also no surety that a fire will erupt. This therefore may be a precaution that wastes the money of people in case a fire never happens in that residential place.
