Gender at Work Interview Project

Gender and Work – Seeley – Sp17

This course focuses on gender and work, particularly how men and women do different types of work, have different experiences while working, and derive different rewards from work. For this assignment you will examine the real experiences of a man and woman working in the same occupation. You will interview one man and one woman about their experiences at work and then compare and contrast their experiences both with each other and with what sociologists already know about the social construction of their particular occupation as masculine or feminine. The goal of this project is for you to analyze the interviews you have collected using the concepts we have learned this term. You will produce a final paper exploring how your occupation of interest is gendered masculine or feminine and how this influences the experiences of individuals in that occupation. This assignment has 2 main parts: 1) Interview Notes Due March 23 by 11pm **Upload .docx (MS Word) file to Canvas via Assignments Section. Interview notes are worth 10% of your final grade. Your final paper will be based largely on original empirical research you conduct, meaning conversations with individuals actually working in a gendered occupation. You are expected to conduct interviews with a man and a woman employed in the same occupation (e.g., both doctors, both nurses). You will be responsible for finding two individuals in the same occupation and getting them to sit down for an interview. You are not required to record the interview, though you may find that doing so makes it easier to remember what people say later. Recording may only be done with the permission of the individual. If you do not record the interview, you will need to take thorough notes on what the individuals say. In class together we will develop a set of questions that will help guide your interviews. The questions we develop will cover the practical aspects of working in a given occupation, how people feel about their jobs, and how gender has influenced their experiences at work. You will need to supplement these questions with questions specific to the occupation, workplace, and/or individuals you are examining. The focus should be on the individual’s work and professional life, though work/life balance may be a topic. On March 23, you must submit two 1-2 page summaries of the interviews you have conducted. Each summary should provide a detailed description of one of the individuals, their experiences, and perspectives on key themes like discrimination or gendered experiences. This is not a transcription of the interviews, but a distillation of what you learned from your conversation with the individual. You do not need to report everything that was said, just provide evidence that you successfully completed the interview and gathered the information necessary to write your paper. 2) Final Paper Due April 13 **Bring hardcopy to class. Final Paper is worth 10% of your final grade. Your final paper will combine primary information gathered from your interviews with secondary information collected from academic and other sources. You will describe the occupation you have examined, present the interview data you collected, and then analyze the stories your interviewees told you using course concepts. You should report on the interviewees’ answers to your questions and use their responses to discuss how gender does and does not influence the work lives of men and women. The goal is to show that you have a deep understanding of the concepts encountered in this course and are able to apply them to real life situations. Length: 10-12 pages Your final paper should be structured as follows: 1) Introduction (1-2 pages): Describe the occupation you are examining using information gathered from scholarly (e.g., books, journal articles), government (e.g., Bureau of Labor statistics, Department of Labor job descriptions), and popular sources (e.g., news articles, professional association websites). Discuss whether the occupation is gendered masculine or feminine and how this is expressed through cultural images of the occupation, the demographics of workers, cultural practices and symbols, occupational norms, the occupation’s status and prestige, and/or other means. Your introduction should show persuasively how the occupation you are examining is socially constructed as “men’s” or “women’s” work. 2) Data (6-8 pages): Present in detail, using direct quotes and concrete examples as evidence, the information gathered from the interviews you conducted. Describe the interviewees and their particular jobs, along with their perceptions of the relevance of gender to their work experiences. This may include (but not be limited to) others’ expectations and treatment of them, job titles, appearance norms, duties, interactions with others, rewards, difficulties, training, opportunities, and/or self-conception. Compare and contrast the answers provided by your interviewees to highlight how gender is and is not important to their work experiences. Examine similarities and differences in the experiences of the two workers as a result of their different genders and how that matches or conflicts with the gender of the occupation. You should discuss how the gender of their occupation impacts their individual experiences in that occupation as well as how their individual gender influences their approach to and feelings about their job. The goal of the data section is to illuminate (dis)similarities in the particular experiences of a man and woman in the same occupation. Pseudonyms should be assigned to interviewees; do not use real names. 3) Analysis (2-3 pages): Using concepts from this class, analyze the responses you presented in your data section for what they indicate about the broad sociological importance of gender for structuring work and workplace experiences. You should focus on how the individual experiences of your interviewees are influenced by structural forces like the social construction of gender, gender inequality in society, and the gender division of labor. You may also consider how individual actions (i.e., agency) might alter the impact of social structures on individuals. You must use at least 3 concepts we have discussed this term in your analysis (e.g., tokenism, intersectionality, glass ceiling, emotional labor). Place a concept in bold the first time you use it. One of the main aims of this paper is for you to demonstrate your understanding of course concepts, which you can do by correctly applying the ideas and theories we have discussed to real world events and experiences. Questions to consider: How do your interviewees’ experiences compare and contrast with the main themes of this term like gender division of labor, the influence of gender on how people are judged and treated, gender socialization to different occupations, and women’s greater responsibility for domestic labor? Do they provide clear examples of any of the ideas and theories we have encountered this term? Does gender seem more or less important to the experiences of your interviewees than suggested by our course concepts? How do your interviewees’ experiences and answers support or conflict with the scholarly approaches to gender and work we have encountered this term? Do the experiences of your interviewees provide ways to supplement or critique the concepts we have learned this term? 4) Works Cited: Provide a formal list of bibliographic references for materials used in this paper using the format provided in the ASA Quick Style Guide. Final papers should employ standard academic citation practices, including parenthetical citation. You should follow the ASA Quick Style Guide, posted on Canvas in the Syllabus and Assignment Instructions Folder. Formatting for notes and paper: Double-spaced, 1 inch margins, 12 point font, Times New Roman font, no cover page, remove extra spacing between paragraphs, and label with just your name and the date in the top left corner of the first page. Failure to follow directions may result in a loss of points.
