Short answer questions (Roughly one paragraph) and Long answer question (roughly a 1-1.5 pages if they were handwritten)
Please use course terms and ideas,not just your own personal ideas. There is a conceit here that the class offers something additional to our everyday understanding or at least clarifies it. Even if it doesn’t, use the course terms. I wrote these questions based on my slides, and you should be able to answer the questions from those, with supplement from the textbook as needed.
Short Answer: Identify and explain. Provide examples where applicable to illustrate your claims.
1)Identify three ways that research shows mothers and fathers differ in their communication with children with regards to gender, according to Wood or lecture (Module 6, Growing up Gendered)
2)Identify and explain three message boys are given growing up and three messages girls are given according to lecture/textbook. Be sure to give examples to flesh out your description (Module 6, Growing up Gendered).
3)What is the “invisible hand of discrimination†according to lecture/textbook? Explain at least one example of unwitting biases(Glass Ceilings, Glass Walls, Tenure process) with regards to women in the workplace (Module 7. Gender and Workplace)
4)How has gender discrimination in the workplace changed from the past (pre-Civil Rights Act) to the present? Give an example of discrimination from both then and now. (Module 7: Gender and Workplace)
5)Name and explain three costs to (pressures on) men because of gender inequality in the workplace.(Module 7: Gender and Workplace)
- Define relational dialectics. Identify and explain the two of the three main relational dialectics and give examples of each either from lecture, movies, or your personal life. (Module 8: Gender & Relationships)
- How and why does consumerism and advertising have a stake in making us believe we are not ok and need more things in order to be ok? Give an example of how new products that were supposed to make women’s lives better potentially had the opposite effect(Module 10: Gender & Media)
- According to the book, lecture, or documentary (Miss Representation) In what ways are women underrepresented(and/or misrepresented) in news and entertainment? What effects might that have on people’s attitudes towards gender? (Module 10: Gender & Media)
Long Answer Study Questions (2 total — pick one) :
- Compare and contrast typically feminine and typically masculine models of friendship as laid out in the lecture or book. Give examples of each type either from the film we watched (I love you, Man), from the textbook, from your observations or from your own life. (Module 8: Gender & Relationships)
- Identify and explain the four cultural factors that create/support glass ceilings and walls for women in employment (Module 7: Gender and Workplace)
