Johnson, Richard Nixon was appointed as the president in 1969 and the program of Vietnamization was catalyzed to equip and train South Vietnamese for their own defense and to make US military forces withdraw from the war. Consequently, by the end of the year first troop of the US consisting of 69,000 men had withdrawn. However, it was observed that on March 9, 1970, the US marine took control of almost five provinces in the extreme northern part of South Vietnam to the American army (Gilbert 84-141). Marines had the great responsibility of this region as they initially landed at that zone of South Vietnam. The change in responsibility was observed out of Nixon’s decision of training and equipping the South Vietnamese for their own fight and withdrawal of US troops from that region.
