Type 2 Diabetes: A Public Health Crisis

My essay focused on public health and the issue is type 2 diabetes. Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus occurs when the human body develops resistance to insulin, because the pancreas lost the ability to produce it. According to Afroz et al. (2018), diabetes “is one of the world’s most prevalent and serious non-communicable diseases. It is a leading cause of death, disability and financial loss; moreover, it is identified as a major threat to global development.” (p.1) This disorder is very prevalent in the underserved population, and because of the financial restriction placed on this population, the disorders usually goes unmanaged resulting in macrovascular and microvascular complications such as, strokes and heart attacks. These complications usually results in the underserved population seeking help from the emergency rooms, which places a financial burden on the healthcare system such as Medicaid. Therefore, as type 2 diabetes becomes prevalent with those in the underserved population resulting in increased morbidity and mortality rates, there is a financial burden placed on the healthcare system.

This topic is important because of the serious implication it places on the human health and the healthcare system. Public health is about preventing diseases and prolonging life, and this disorders threatens this concept, in 2015, the “seventh leading cause of death” was diabetes with an estimate of “79,535” to “252,806” death certificates. (“National Diabetes Statistics Report,” 2017, p.10) Therefore, it is important to focus on the disorder and start finding ways to solve the issues.
