Managers Economic Proposal: Prepare an 8–12 slide PowerPoint (.ppt or .pptx file) presentation using a minimum of two (2) slides per initiative. Elements of Presentation:

Use a maximum of six bullets on each slide with highlights of the information you would present if you were in front of your audience.

Include speaker notes in the speaker notes section based on what you will verbally present or you may opt for voice overs (recorded presentation on each slide).

Include a thorough, clear, and concise introduction of the overall initiatives. Be creative to draw the audience into the presentation with compelling questions, or by relating to the audience’s interests of your hypothetical health care organization

Using your approved initiatives, develop a presentation that includes, but is not limited to, the following elements:

Introduction your hypothetical health care organization/facility establishing your audience.

Explanation of your approved initiatives brief implementation plan.

Purpose of your initiatives (what is the significant affiliation to health care organizations).

How your initiatives influence health care organizations.

How your initiatives relate specifically to health care management.

How your initiatives interconnect to economical concepts and principles.

Include a minimum of three (3) scholarly references (one for each initiative) from the Excelsior Library in aIDition to the textbook. Please properly cite each slide, list all references on the reference slide, and include a title slide, all in APA format. Price discrimination is common in healthcare, as well as other industries. Price discrimination can increase profits. Read case study 12.1 in the textbook on price discrimination and compose a case study report that follows the recommended format in the “Case Study Rubric”.

Write a two-page, double-spaced paper in APA format, including a title and reference page.  Cite and reference the Lee textbook and two aIDitional scholarly resources from the readings

Include evidence on price discrimination and aIDress the following questions in your paper narrative (do not copy and paste questions and answer one at a time, but rather integrate the answers as appropriate in your written text. Q & A format is not acceptable):

Why do drug firms give discounts voluntarily?

Do other healthcare providers routinely give discounts to some customers?

Why do the uninsured typically pay the highest prices?

Why would a hospital usually get a better price for a drug than an insurance company?

Why does the VA get such low prices?

Suppose a law was enacted that required drug manufacturers to give state Medicaid agencies the same price they negotiated with the VA. How would Medicaid and VA prices change?

Consumer protection is strongly regulated in business through the consumer protection agency and other government regulations. In healthcare, government regulations also serve multiple purposes with regard to consumers (or patients) in protecting their interest or as a means of educating the public.  At one point, everyone may have difficulty making health care decisions or may not know when to seek care.  Practice-based, holistic, and experimental medicine is made available to patients, however, even scientific data may fall short to prove what decisions may be best for you or your family. Providers may offer incentives, recommendations, referrals, or other information to assist with those decisions, nonetheless the burden falls on the patient. What may be best for one may not be best for another. Consumers as patients also tend to ignore good and bad advice when unable to distinguish between the two. This activity will explore consumer inexperience (aka. ignorance), and how market outcomes using data can assist in the decisions consumers will ultimately need to make at some point in their lifetime.

Begin by reading Case Study 17.3 [PDF file, 306KB] in your Lee textbook.

Then, compose a two-page case study report following APA format, which includes a title and reference page.  You must cite and reference the Lee textbook locate and include at least two aIDitional scholarly resources from the readings or from your own research in the Library.

In your case study composition, include evidence on how one can be influenced by market outcomes and encompass the answers to the following questions into your paper in a narrative format (Q & A format is not acceptable):

What evidence can you find that report cards have improved quality?

By what mechanisms could report cards improve reported market outcomes?

Does the scarcity of scientific evidence on effectiveness of report cards matter?

Could publication of performance data be advantageous to hospitals or physicians?

How do report cards aIDress information asymmetries?

Would reducing information asymmetries guarantee better markets?

Does it matter whether governments or private organizations produce report cards?

For this question, you will analyze the scenario using the template provided with the case. Rather than simply stating an opinion, you must include scholarly sources to support your discussion. You are welcome to use your textbook and any materials found throughout the course; researching aIDitional sources is allowed but not required. To assist your reflection, each question lists the reading that pertains to the topic.

Your project should include a title page (project title, your name, class, date and instructor’s name), APA formatted inline citations as appropriate and a bibliography for any references used. You may list your references for each question at the end of the individual responses. Please double-space your response, which should be approximately between 500-700 words. Introduction to the Midterm Case Analysis:

This mid-term project is worth 20% of your final grade and provides an opportunity for you to learn how to develop elements of a case analysis, such as identifying relevant medical facts and legal influences, stakeholder positions and motivations, policy considerations, legal issues and ethical considerations. The objective is to assist you in recognizing the various components contributing to and influencing an ethical dilemma arising in healthcare. Upon the completion of the activity, you should have enhanced insight into analyzing medical ethical dilemmas that may arise in your own professional or private lives. The reading for the assignment contains the information you will need to complete the assignment. While you are welcome to use other sources, it is not necessary.

Mid-Term Project: Template for the Terri Schiavo Case Analysis

1. Briefly outline the relevant medical facts contributing to Ms. Schiavo’s condition
2. Provide a brief summary of the legal history specific to Ms. Schiavo’s case. Include a discussion of the major past cases which influenced the issues in the case, focusing primarily on an individual’s right to refuse medical care.
3. Based on your readings and discussions in Module 4, discuss some of the legal considerations of relevance in Ms. Schiavo’s case.
4. Discuss the contextual motivations potentially influencing the following stakeholders (those directly or indirectly affected by the case), and the ethical or moral justifications for their positions: Ms. Schiavo’s parents, her husband, the Governor of Florida as a representative of a state’s interest, taxpayers and the disabled community.
5. Based on what you have learned so far in this course, state your ethical position relative to the issue–what would you do? Remember to justify your position.
6. Discuss at least one of the health policy considerations that are present in this case.

• In developing your response, keep in mind that public policy seeks to protect and benefit the welfare, safety and interests of society while balancing the rights of individuals. Health policy considerations are issues that can and/or should be discussed, and changed in order to avoid scenarios such as what happened with Terri Schiavo.

7. Briefly discuss what you have learned from your exploration of the Terri Schiavo case. Has the case influenced your view of advanced directives? Presuming you have not already, are you now considering completing your own advance directives? Why or Why Not?
