Identify at least one social policy and one recent proposed policy (either general proposals or specific policy
proposals) that deal in some way with your condition. Keep in mind that some policies may directly deal with
your condition while others may deal with just one element of it (the policy and proposed policy you select can
do either).
The following are some areas you can look through to find a policy and a proposed policy. Please keep in mind
that this homework assignment may take a good amount of time, so it is best to start on this early (i.e., don’t
wait until the “night beforeâ€)
ï‚·
Look through the sources in your annotated bibliography. Some of them, such as organizations dealing
with your condition or news articles about your condition, may discuss policies and/or proposed policies,
which you can research on the internet.
ï‚·
Look through CA Code of Regulations (go to
https://oal.ca.gov/publications/ccr/ then select the online
access). This is a quite extensive database of state-level (CA) policies or the Code of Federal Regulations,
which is the same thing but at the federal level.
ï‚·
Look at the Congressional Record, which is an official record of the proceedings and debates of the U.S.
Congress. It is publicly available via THOMAS, at the following link
http://thomas.loc.gov/home/LegislativeData.php?n=R…
ï‚·
Look at through Center for Policy Initiatives (CPI) website (
https://cpisandiego.org/). CPI is an organization
that does much policy work on a variety of issues.
ï‚·
Look through the CQ Researcher database that you learned about from the library.
Then, answer the following:
1. With regard to the policy that exists:
a) What is the name of the policy? Is it a local (e.g., organization or city like SD), state (e.g., CA) or
federal (U.S.) policy?
b) What does the policy mandate, as it relates to your troubling condition?
c)
Do you think this policy is likely to solve the problem (troubling condition) you are focusing on?
Why or why not?
2. With regard to the proposed policy:
a) What is the name of the proposed policy? Is it directed at the local (e.g., organization or city like
SD), state (e.g., CA) or federal (U.S.) level?
b) What would the policy mandate with regards to your troubling condition?
c)
If implemented, do you think this policy is likely to solve the problem (troubling condition) you are
focusing on? Why or why not?
3. Imagine you were able to determine a policy to be implemented that deals with your condition, and
answer the following
a) What policy would you implement and why? In answering this, explain why you think such policy
would solve the social problem you’ve focused on. Which categories of people would be impacted
by this policy, and how?
b) How likely do you think a policy like this would be proposed and implemented and why? In
answering this, consider the current political climate and economic situation related to your
condition, as well as public reaction related to your condition.
