What happened in Wisconsin? There was a labor conflict in Wisconsin. This labor conflict happened not only in Wisconsin but also in Indiana and Ohio States. The governor of Wisconsin, Scott Walker, tried to deny the state’s public-employee unions their collective bargaining rights (Terkel, 2011). The governor sought to make it possible to shore up the estimated 3 billion loss of the state. This legislative action sparked a great protest in Madison, Wisconsin; huge crowds of about twenty-five thousand protestors participated in refuting the change which they deemed to be malicious and meddling with their rights. The Democratic senators from Wisconsin fled the state to prevent the bill from being voted on. Many opponents of the proposed collective bargaining overhaul in Ohio State surrounded the statehouse while demanding that the bill is shoved down before it could be heard. Apart from the bill aiming at depriving the state employees their collective bargaining rights, it also focused on cutting away the rights of the local government employees. This was a move that the civil servants of the states were never comfortable with (Budd, 2008). The Indiana’s legislature also considered the bill with the idea that the bill will help in stripping Indiana teachers their rights in collective bargaining between the teachers unions and the local districts (Terkel, 2011). The state considered the bill as one that will focus on wage and wage-related benefits. The bill would also limit the contract of teachers to a length of two years hence matching the length of Indiana’s budget cycle. In his article posted on Huffington Post website, Amanda Terkel pointed out that the middle-class people in the United States were attached from the newly elected and established representatives from the Republican Party in some states. However, several labor unions started organizing to fight back the series of attacks on the American workers by the pro-business state legislative and executive branches of government (Terkel, 2011).
