Possible implications that the career development model presents would have to be the exploration stage. Seeing firsthand how many individuals reach a level of boredom within their current jobs and positions, and seek out different careers all together, starting and being able to get your ‘foot in the door’, is hardly ever easy. So within the exploration stage, when one has finally identified “the type of work or occupation that interest them”, then comes the challenge of gaining opportunities to work in that field” (Noe, 2010, pg.456).
Noe give a somewhat ‘solution’ to this often challenge, “in most cases, employees who are new to a job are not prepared to take on work tasks and roles without help and direction from others…in many jobs the new employee is considered an apprentice…who works under the supervision and direction of a more experience colleague or manager”(Noe, 2010, pg. 457).
In my experience when one is considering and/or hoping to land a job that they have very little or no experience in, looking at companies who acknowledge and have established in place apprenticeships, shows great promise. In that the company knows that there may be great candidates out there, with lots of potential, and could fill the role beautifully if properly trained.
On the other hand, being prepared to not come across jobs who have the means and/or resources to have established apprenticeships in placed is important. This is where being open to taking advantage of internships, and job shadowing opportunities is a huge plus on one’s career path.
