CBT and REBT are therapeutic approaches within the cognitive behavioral family of approaches. You may already have been asking yourself what, if any, are the differences between these approaches. For this Discussion, you revisit the topic of discussion from Week 1 to consider the relationship between irrational beliefs and cognitive distortions, to consider whether your thoughts have evolved on this issue. You also consider their relationship to CBT and REBT and what implications this has for your understanding of the two approaches.

To prepare:

• Review the Week 1 Discussion on irrational beliefs and cognitive distortions, including your initial posts as well as response posts among your colleagues.
• Review the Aaron Beck on Cognitive Therapy video in the week’s Learning Resources, considering the main tenets of his approach. Are there differences between it and REBT? What is the relationship between CBT and REBT?

With these thoughts in mind:

Write 1-2 pages an explanation of whether your opinion about irrational beliefs and cognitive distortions has changed or remained the same since the Week 1 Discussion. Then explain how irrational beliefs and cognitive distortions relate to CBT and REBT. Further, explain whether there are differences between the CBT and REBT approaches to therapy, or whether they are the same.
