Week 8

Case Scenario:

You have been asked to consult with local liquor store owners, local parent groups, counselors, and principles from 3 local high-schools. The schools are interested in selecting and implementing an alcohol abuse prevention program for their community because alcohol use is an alarming problem for high-schoolers in their community. The parents are blaming the liquor store owners for selling to minors and are pushing for a dry county. The parents report that the liquor store is not well managed and that the employees have been known to hang out in the break room for hours at a time. The liquor store owners are blaming the parents for not being more attentive to what their children are doing, as well as the school system for not having an after-school program for the teens when they get out of school. The owners report that the students get into mischief because they are bored and most of their parents are working when the kids get out of school. The school counselors and principles are basically pointing blame at the parents, as well as the liquor store owners. There are 80 angry parents at this meeting, 8 liquor store owners, 6 school counselors and 3 principles.

Think about the chaos that must be invading this room! Be thinking about what approach you should take as you are trying to gain control of this out-of-control situation! Where is the order? Think about if you are going to address this entire mass at one time, or should you be thinking of appointing representatives for the different sides?

Strange analogy, but here it goes…

It’s like you and your hungry neighbors have separate ingredients for pizza, but unless you all come together and work toward the common goal of making the pizza then there will be no resolution for the hunger situation!

4 – II. Working with a group of this size will most likely end up being a disorganized mess. Your next step would be to organize two groups consisting of a mixture of representatives from all sides. Groups of course will conduct their own meetings and then will report back to the fully assembled larger group at a later date.
