Order Description

The exam must be written in a test booklet (a green book). Booklets are available for purchase in the bookstore. It is a good idea to bring more than

1 book to the exam. Please write your exam in pen.

The exam will consist of three sections: Short Answer Questions (40 points total, 20 points each), and a Long Essay (40 points).

For the Short Answer Question, please write brief (about 2 paragraphs) responses

The long essay will require you to write a clear, well-organized essay in response to one of the questions listed below.

SHORT ANSWER QUESTIONS
1. What Americans experienced the greatest expansion of freedoms in the early republic and what types of rights did this group enjoy? In addition,

choose one group (African slaves/free blacks, Native Americans, or women) and describe how that group was excluded from the expansion of liberties.

2. How did the market revolution change American work patterns? In what ways did the market revolution seem to go against the values of the American

Revolution?

3. What were the shared goals of many of the utopian communities that emerged during the Second Great Awakening? Choose one utopian community (the

Shakers or the Oneida Community) and discuss how that community attempted to reach their goals.

4. The first thirty years of the 19th century witnessed the four largest slave conspiracies and revolts in US history. In this short answer, describe

the events surrounding one of the following conspiracies/revolts (Gabriel’s Rebellion, The Vesey Revolt, or Nat Turner’s Rebellion). Who led the

rebellion, what were its aims/inspirations, what were the outcomes of the revolt?

ESSAY QUESTIONS
1. The system of slavery that developed in the United States was the largest, most powerful slave society in human history. In part, slavery became

so entrenched in American life because, in the minds of many Americans, the enslavement of African Americans was viewed as necessary for the freedom

of others. In this essay, discuss the significance of slavery throughout the United States. You may do so by focusing on one of the following topics:

1. Why was slavery not abolished during the Revolutionary period? 2. How did slavery become even more entrenched during the antebellum period and

what arguments were made in support of slavery?

2. In this essay, trace the evolution of American Indian policy. What were the views that early colonists held of Native Americans and how did those

views influence their treatment? How did policies towards Native Americans change during the early national era and the first half of the 19th

century?
