Monday 11-18: Letters 1-4 (all of them) and chapters 1-4. This first reading from Frankenstein is pretty short and is the set-up for the novel. In literary studies you’d call it the frame story. It’s the background to events of Frankenstein you might know even if you haven’t read the novel. You should read Letters 1-4 and Chapters 1-4 and write an RR. In this section we meet two men, Robert Walton and Victor Frankenstein. They represent one of several “doubles” in the novel. In your RR’s you can write about whatever is interesting to you, but a useful approach might be to compare the two men. What are their characters? Why do they feel a connection? Alternative response: Or you can do a visual response. Use the prompt questions above but respond to them with a visualization that conveys them. Include a paragraph that explains how your visualization responds to the questions. As I’ve said before I evaluate visual responses not on artistic ability but rather on the visual conceptualization of the prompt.
