Perdue Farm Factory (Perdue) is a meat processing company in the United States of America. It processes pork, turkey, and chicken. The company has been criticized in the past for mistreating the birds by hanging them upside down before slaughtering. The company was also accused of torturing the birds by depriving the birds of the required important needs like light, water, and food for extended times. If we have to slaughter the birds, we should kill them quickly and without stress. The companies should follow the law of the states on how to take care of the animals. We should care for the animals by handling according to the legislation of the state.

The way Perdue, or any meat processing company, treats the animals can also affect the health of consumers. If we treat the chicken with antibiotics and other chemicals, then there is more likely a chance it will affect ourselves because the chemicals, when consumed by the chicken in farm factories become part of the meat consumed by humans. So in mistreating and torturing animals, we can also kill ourselves indirectly or affect our health. Some great scholars such as Aristotle asked what kind of person we should be. However, I think deontology comes into play here. Kant’s deontology calls for doing only what can be universalized and helping do the right thing for everyone. “By not treating persons as a means to an end but only as ends in themselves (Zuniga y Postigo G, 2015)”, companies and people prosper. Perdue and other meat processing firms can’t just think of the processing of chicken to gain profit but the lasting effects of their decision to follow state and federal regulations to help people, who may be harmed if these are not followed. This ethical theory can be used to address the case of the Perdue and other farming factories.

A mixed economy is the existence of both public and private sectors in a state. The mixed economies fall in between free markets and command economies. In the mixed economies there is both individual ownership of resources as well as communal ownership. The government may interfere with the markets by imposing taxes and tariffs mostly on foreign products. This is to protect the consumable product from other factories that process food made of chemicals. Perdue reflects the mixed economy in that it is a family owned business which owns resources. The government in its part has also been involved in regulating the way this organization is carrying out its activities. This is through setting some laws in place for the company to follow.

The way businesses perform their activities can have a positive or negative effect on people. If a manufacturing company fails to follow the rules and regulations, then there’s a possibility of defects in its product which may result in a human heath issue. This will lead to even consuming poisonous products. Therefore, companies must adhere to rules and regulations set at the state and federal level. Perdue guarantees the freshness of their chicken by “going beyond what the USDA requires with extra inspections (PerdueChicken, 2004).” By explaining to customers the ingredients used to make a product, disclosing this information helps consumers make informed purchasing decisions. They should also avoid false advertising and operate according to the law.

Why do you think so many people eat meat, especially in the U.S.? Other “animals” eat meat, so what is different about humans eating meat that causes some consumers to protest against it? Is the debate because we question the morality of eating meat and other animals do not have the ability to think that way? Some cultures have actually stopped eating meat and others only eat meat as it relates to their culture’s symbolic rituals. 

A lawsuit filed by The Humane Society of the U.S. claims that Perdue falsely advertised that the birds they use are humanely raised. Contrary to that claim, there is evidence that the chickens have their legs shackled, are hung upside-down, are electrically shocked, kept for hours in trucks in extreme temperatures, and a variety of other inhumane treatments. (http://www.prwatch.org/news/2013/04/12039/consumers-allege-perdues-humane-poultry-labels-are-false-and-deceptive). Do you think the protest against meat-eating has more to do with the treatment of the animals or just the idea of eating another living thing?
