Discussion over the semester included many standard topics for sexual health classes, some more serious than others. In CPH 203 we focused discussion on the public health lens of sexual health, including the areas of epidemiology, health behavior, health systems, etc.

However, the intersection of public health and sexual health can be vague, and public health professionals who focus on sexual health spend most of their time addressing negative health consequences and prevention rather than sex as a fun activity with positive health outcomes and psychological benefits.

Consider the WHO definition of sexual health:

“sexual health is a state of physical, emotional, mental and social well-being in relation to sexuality; it is not merely the absence of disease, dysfunction or infirmity. Sexual health requires a positive and respectful approach to sexuality and sexual relationships, as well as the possibility of having pleasurable and safe sexual experiences, free of coercion, discrimination and violence. For sexual health to be attained and maintained, the sexual rights of all persons must be respected.”

For this assignment you will choose ONE topic within sexual health (i.e. HIV, sexual violence, STIs, specific legislation, etc.) that public health has not addressed at all, ineffectively, incorrectly, or too negatively. The topic you choose does not have to be something we covered in class, but it does need to be directly relevant to our discussions. If in doubt, ask me about it before you write your entire paper!

You must address the following:

1. Clearly describe the sexual health topic you feel needs improvement, and how it is linked to public health
2. Explain how public health has “missed the mark” with its work on your topic, or why that work has not been effective
3. Suggest ways public health professionals can improve their efforts in the area of sexual health you choose
4. Provide ideas for public health professionals to “tackle” this issue with an innovative, positive, sensitive, optimistic approach vs. negative approach typically seen in the field

Your paper should be a minimum of 3, maximum of 5 pages double-spaced, 11 point Calibri font. The paper is worth 20 points. Refer to the grading rubric posted on Canvas for point breakdown. You Should have 3 reliable sources.
