Just in the United States of America (USA), the Latino community makes about 55.6 million of the population and with a 15% of them being above the age of 65 (Caceres & Perez, 2018). When looking closer at the health-related issues in this population group, one will find that there is a high number of Latinos with debilitating chronic conditions such as: diabetes, cardiovascular disease (CVD), cancers, dementia, and Alzheimer (Caceres & Perez, 2018). Due to financial or legal reasons, many Latino families are uninsured, making them less likely to visit a clinic or a hospital for a routine check-up (Caceres & Perez, 2018). The issue of cultural and language barrier is another factor that limits many Latinos from applying to government programs, such as Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security Income (Caceres & Perez, 2018). The lack of communication and the cultural shock they face, makes it difficult for many elderly Hispanics immigrants to venture out of their comfort zone to apply for medical assistance (Caceres & Perez, 2018). Many Latino families have at least one family member who has Alzheimer disease (Caceres & Perez, 2018). This disease is not only debilitating for the one who has the disease but also for those family members who have to make sacrifices to protect and care for their love ones (Caceres & Perez, 2018). Stress and depression are common factors among individuals of this population who have to balance their lives between adapting to a new country/culture, and dealing with family and personal obligations (Caceres & Perez, 2018). CVA is a disorder that affects both the heart and the blood vessels and if not treated it can lead to harmful and fatal effects to an individual’s health (Jacobsen, 2019). Currently, CVA is the main cause of death for both men and women (Jacobsen, 2019) For this reason, nurses and healthcare providers must take drastic measures to educate their patients on ways to live a healthy lifestyle.
