Practice is essential to learning intervention techniques. In this activity, you will role-play and reflect on specific intervention techniques through a media interaction with a 30-year-old client named Kylie. Consider how the use of these techniques is both empowering and ethical, based on the NASW Code of Ethics.

Upon completion of this assignment, you should be able to:

Background Information

Contemporary social work practice emphasizes the use of strengths-informed and evidence-based intervention techniques, such as narrative therapy, solution-focused therapy, and cognitive behavioral therapy. Ongoing training and further education on each of these techniques (and many others)

is
recommended for social workers who work directly with clients in need. The media activity “In the Social Worker’s Office” depicts a client who would benefit from any of these intervention techniques or a combination of them. This clip demonstrates how even in an initial session, clients can make progress towards changing their perspective on their life story, their obstacles, and their ability to create change.

Instructions

1. In your textbook, Social Work Skills for Beginning Direct Practice, review Chapter 11.
2. Watch the presentation “In the Therapist Office”
   1. The activity will invite you to respond to questions about the session.
   2. Post your responses in the discussion board thread.
3. Consider how the NASW Code of Ethics applies to the intervention phase of the social work practice framework and how it applies to this case study scenario. Write one paragraph that describes how the use of strengths-based approaches with Kylie demonstrated an ethical approach to intervention with this client.
4. Reflect on the video watched during the previous workshop. What intervention might you use for your chosen character? Write one paragraph that describes how your chosen intervention and how you would use the intervention with the client. Use sources to support your answers.
5. Make your initial post by the 4th day of the workshop.
6. Use subheadings based on the discussion prompts to organize your post.
7. By the end of the workshop, read and respond to at least two of your classmates’ posts. Your posts and responses should also:
   1. Provide clear answers with evidence of critical thinking.
   2. Add depth to the discussion by introducing new ideas.
   3. Answer classmates’ questions and provide insight into the discussion.
