theology thoughts questions new testament

PART 1 :

Watch the clip of Shameless

Scriptures quoted in the clip (ESV):

Quote 1: I will not set before my eyes

anything that is worthless.

I hate the work of those who fall away;

it shall not cling to me. (Psalm 101:3)

Quote 2: Owe no one anything, except to love each other, for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law. 9 For the commandments, “You shall not commit adultery, You shall not murder, You shall not steal, You shall not covet,” and any other commandment, are summed up in this word: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” 10 Love does no wrong to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfilling of the law. (Romans 13:8-10)

Quote 3: Do you not know that the unrighteous[a] will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality[b] 10 nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. (1 Corinthians 6:9-10.)

Verse 11 was left out; “And such were some of you. But you were washed, you were sanctified (set apart), you were justified (declared righteous) in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.”

Footnotes:

[a] 1 Corinthians 6:9 Or wrongdoers

[b] 1 Corinthians 6:9 The two Greek terms translated by this phrase refer to the passive and active partners in consensual homosexual acts

Quote 4: Here there is not Greek and Jew, circumcised and uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave, free; but Christ is all, and in all. 12 Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, 13 bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. (Colossians 3:11-13)

Quote 5: But he who is joined to the Lord becomes one spirit with him. 18 Flee from sexual immorality. Every other sin a person commits is outside the body, but the sexually immoral person sins against his own body. 19 Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own,20 for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body. (1 Corinthians 6:17-20)

Not quoted but relevant to the dialogue

Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant 5 or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; 6 it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. (1 Corinthians 13:4-6)

Let all that you do be done in love. (1 Corinthians 16:14)

Brothers, if anyone is caught in any transgression, you who are spiritual should restore him in a spirit of gentleness. (Galatians 6:1)

Assignment

In two brief paragraphs, evaluate the dialogue in the video. Print it and hand it in on November 19. To help you articulate an answer, consider some of the following questions:

Did either person in the dialogue make their case with their biblical quotations? How was their demeanor during the dialogue? Are these simply entertaining stereotypes of the judgemental preacher and the angry young gay man? Is confronting someone in public a loving thing to do? Jesus sometimes confronted people in public (e.g. Matthew 23). Do Christians has this right also? Was there a better time to have this dialogue? What about the missing verse 11 in Quote 3? The Christians in Corinth were not morally perfect, yet were declared righteous. They were simultaneously saints in God’s eyes (“declared righteous”), and sinners in their behaviors.

PART 2 :

Short essay

  1. Who is Jesus according to Matthew?

2. Write what you know about the man, Matthew.
