The Red Tent: Heresy, History or “Her-story? Please read the novel at least twice –once for fun and enjoyment to get the story and then a second time with careful attention to the biblical ideas, texts, and setting. Follow these instructions very carefully!

These articles will help you determine what is in the Bible vs. what are Diamant’s midrashic inventions. The Discussion/Study Questions are interesting and can help you direct you to salient points in the book but you do NOT need to deal with them. Make sure you understand the book and the issues Diamant is dealing with.

Now, based on what you have learned about society and life in ancient Israel, feminist and gendered interpretation of scripture, and various readings on the Genesis texts, imagine how you would respond (as a scholar ) to the 2 reviews.

Responding to both the negative (Rothman) and positive (Redman) review, write your own review. The title of the review should be The Red Tent: Heresy, History or “Her-story?” This means you can adopt any of these perspectives or a combination of them. Respond from what YOU thought of the book, not what you think I want you to say about it.

You should write about 8-10 pages double spaced—more is fine. This is not a book report—I do not want a summary of the plot. Make sure you use quotes and excerpts from the novel, the reviews, and the Bible to make your points.
