ENC 1102 – Project 2: Photo Essay“Imagining an Underwater Miami” 

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) projects that global sea level could rise between three to six feet by 2100. At the minimum, 4.2 million people would be affected by extreme flooding, and almost half of this population would be Floridians. Significant sections of Miami could disappear forever, and many families would have to find new homes. 

For this essay, imagine that humanity does not take sufficient action to curb climate change, and Miami slowly sinks into the sea. What place in the city would you want to protect for future generations? Why is this place so important to you, your family, or community? Use personal experiences, memories, facts, and at least three images to create a photo essay that supports your argument. 

Tips: 

Your audience for this assignment lives in Wyoming. Persuade them to save your place by appealing to their sense of smell, taste, sight, sound, and feelings. 

Reasons to save your place can be personal, cultural, historical, and/or economic. Use at least three of these reasons in your essay. 

If possible, take different photos of your place to help the audience see its importance. Pictures from the internet can also be used. 

Visit your place and write down the sounds, sights, smells, feelings, and tastes you experience. Use this data in your essay as evidence. 

Photos of your place can include specific people, animals, and “things” that you think are important.

Use NOAA’s Sealevel Rise Viewer to help you imagine an underwater Miami. 

Consider using all the rhetorical appeals to persuade your audience. 

Rules and Guidelines: 

All essays must conform to the academic writing rules and format of the genre to be accepted for grading.

Your essay must use:

12-point font size 

Times New Roman font

Double-spaced paragraphs 

Proper heading and page numbers 

1-inch margins 

Be sure to spellcheck and proofread your work to ensure credibility. 

Final drafts will be 4-5 pages in length. 

Any draft submitted late will incur a half-letter grade deduction for every class day the assignment is late.

Cover the required length and matter of the essay. 

You must use at least three photos of your place in the essay. Five photos are the maximum amount. 

Where you insert your photos should correlate with the point you are trying to prove. 

Do not use outside sources in your essay. 

Consider the reader’s needs when writing your work.
