Overview of the case study

The following case study analysis an unstable government led by greedy and self-centered leaders. It shows how most government officials take advantage of their positions and ranks to control for their own personal gain without caring about the life of a normal citizen. The Bureau of Engraving and Printing has the responsibility of printing government currencies, but its management and staff contributed to its downfall. The issue was very serious that even the media went ahead to publish articles accusing Bureau management of fraud. The printing machines failed over the weekend, and the management could not look for a solution to the problem. Sheila Deceptor, the overall director of the Bureau lacked qualities of an effective manager because he could not take control of the falling organization., On the other hand, the Bureau employees claimed that the organization was functioning properly whereas, it was clear that no business went on behind those closed doors. In addition, the case study demonstrates how politics controls the activities of the nation. The interim company director, Frank, was a professional politician and could easily play with citizen’s minds by assuring them all was well.

On the other hand, the case presents the greedy nature of employees in the organization. They type of management leading a firm determines the behavior of other employees. Steve pilfer was a new government employee but could afford stealing from the Bureau on his first days at work. The organization’s top-level managers never raised any concerns to employees. In addition, politics carried the day at the Bureau. Charlatane interfered with the company’s fiscal policies and altered the budget to fit his claims. He included a surplus of 175 million U.S. dollars that he pocketed with his greedy wife Clara. There was the lack of transparency in the bureau. The top managements were also very corrupt as evidence from the case of Charlatane bribing the human resource manager to hire his friend Travesty without undergoing vetting.

Government employment sector is characterized by employees of all natures working just for the sake of earning salary but not for the benefit of the organization. The case involves Bureau of Engraving and Printing. Effective management practices would help in streamlining operations, and achieve the targets for the company. The first issue involves focusing on people and their success. Printing was the main business conducted in the organization, and it is the duty of the manager to ensure all machines work effectively. The best principle to employ on this sector is consistency. The manager should ensure consistency in the organization by giving the right people the right jobs. The company lacked technicians to take check the machines and instead forced one of the supervisors to work on the machines.

The issue of security requires good management practices to ensure all the security facilities work effectively. Security is a vital area in any organization and managers should use the principle of accountability. This principle will ensure every employee accounts for their specific areas of duty and are held responsible for any problem that arises. Finally, the organization failed on recruitment practices. The recruitment procedure was corrupted by greedy officials. The human resource management should introduce a strategy that involves all stakeholders of the organization in selecting teams for recruitment to new positions.

An effective employee performance evaluation plan should focus on adding value, offering opportunities and identifying organization barriers that hinder employees from exploring their career. The proposed plan should give employees feedback about their productivity in an honest manner and highlight areas that require more efforts. The feedback from the plan helps in improving performance and conduct. Secondly, the plan will allow employees create brief performance standards depending on the individual’s duties and responsibilities in the firm. Finally, the plan will promote collaboration in developing and implementing identified solutions and strategies in order to develop a strong workforce and promote growth.

Conclusion

The following case study acts as a good example for many government organizations that use politics to manage their operations. The case shows effective management plays a significant role in the growth and development of the firm. In addition, organizations are called upon to solve their problems internally in order to avoid instances of whistle-blowing like the case of the Bureau of Engraving. Whistle-blowing ruins the reputation of the company through the media who reveals every secret of the organization to the public. Moreover, the case represents lack of accountability for government employees especially where money is involved. A good manager account for every coin spent in the organization and goes public to give room for financial audit by external auditors. The Bureau of Engraving Company acted differently because bosses altered the budget to their favor and employed their family members and gave them financial responsibilities. The government should condemn such issues in order to achieve economic goals.
