The Ethics of What We Eat Why Our Food Choices Matter

The Ethics of What We Eat: Why Our Food Choices Matter

Project description
Essay Instruction
Compare and contrast the recommendations for meat made by singer and mason(book: The Ethics of What We Eat: Why Our Food Choices Matter) *focus on chapter 16, 17 and 18 to the choices made in NY Times award winning essay Give Thanks for Meat by Jay Bost.
Make 3-4 specific comparisons based on specific point concern or contention. Cite singer and mason at least 3 times, and quote the NYT essay at least twice.
Locate your own dietary philosophy and practice within the above comparison.
Where do you fit ethically? Why? Choose your essay with a thoughtful defense of your food philosophy.
Essay should include a work cited page (using MLA format) that list the singer and mason (book: The Ethics of What We Eat), the Velasquez-Andre’ article (“Thinking Ethically”), and the essay Give Thanks for Meat by Jay Bost.

Below are the requirements of the Unit 2b essay, which I outlined last Wednesday on the chalkboard:

Length: 4 pages (Times Roman 12; double spaced)

Due: Bring a complete first version to class on Wednesday. See the syllabus for the due date of the final version.

Purpose: To locate your meat-eating philosophy on the dietary continuum that includes Peter Singer and Jay Bost, in his award winning essay “Give Thanks for Meat.” By “continuum” I mean the range of eating practices from Vegan to Carnivore, including conscientious omnivore, vegetarian, oolacto-vegetarian, pescaterian, and various religiously governed inclusions of meat in the diet.

Structure:

Introduction: Use a 3-part introductory paragraph (plus a title): 1: Introduce the issue of dietary ethics and gain your reader’s attention; 2) BRIEFLY discuss the issue, provide the titles of the Singer book and Bost essay, and include a contrast that characterizes the essential similarities and differences between Singer (and Mason) and Jay Bost. One similarity, of course, is their concern for or awareness of ethics as applied to meat and treatment of animals for food; 3) a thesis statement that defines your own philosophy and dietary practice as it applies to animals. Use an Although-because sentence to define your own dietary viewpoint and practice as it relates to animals.

Body:
First, compare and contrast the philosophies of Singer and Bost. Use 3-4 distinct points of contention or concern to organize and develop your comparison. Try to include at least two ethical principles as points of contention. For instance, how do the philosophies of each (Singer versus Bost) reflect or embody the principle of justice, the principle of serving the greater good, or the principle of creating a virtuous community? How do their respective philosophies agree or disagree about the importance of personal choice or personal pleasure?

You will need a few paragraphs to carry out this comparison.

*** Cite Singer at least three times (including at least two brief quotations); cite Bost two times in two brief quotations. (This requirement may be slightly different from what I indicated on the board in class.) ***

Second, locate your own philosophy and eating practices in the comparison between Bost and Singer. Are you more like Bost or more like Singer? Explain how and why (with emphasis on ethics). Or, are you undlike either Singer or Bost? For instance, are your eathing choices governed by religious or cultural tradition? (Still, you can explain traditional choices in terms of ethics.) Perhaps your food choices are driven by necessity. That’s fine; but explain with examples what this means.

CLOSE your essay with a recommendation to your reader based on your most important values and reasons. Note how Singer’s book and, perhaps, other recent study, such as the film Food, Inc., have influenced your current food ethics. Explain how you feel readers should think of animals and meat as they live from week to week.

Works Cited page
This should list the three main secondary sources: Singer’s book, Bost’s essay, and the Velasques-Andre’ article (“Thinking Ethically”). Follow MLA guidelines. We will
work in class on the proper form for these three entries.
