The Economy that Slavery Built.

Slavery continues to have an impact on America economically in particular. The podcast categorically states that the institution of slavery was of great importance to the nation. Slaves turned a very weak America into a financial power house and the subsequent world superpower the cotton plantation where the slaves tirelessly worked in. the plantation was America’s first and the biggest business that laid the foundation for other systems to be built and to thrive on. When slavery was started the nation was young, and the buying and selling of African people and the wealth that the country generated from the cheap labor became a lucrative business that the government as a whole banked on.

According to the European colonial masters, the abundant land they had discovered in the Americas would be useless if they could not get the most sufficient and cheap labor to use to their advantage. Slavery was the only system that proved beneficial and the slaves could only be obtained from Africa. They seemed adequate and also ready to work. It is also important to understand that there was an existent slave trade; the Trans-Saharan slave trade which supplied slaves to work in the sugar plantations Mediterranean.

The cotton business that the slaves mainly worked on was considered as a modern business very lucrative and one that was maximizing profits. As the innovations on clothe making were made after the introduction of the cotton gin, the demand for cotton increased and in return it fueled the global industrialization , which opened up the state for other meaningful and beneficial economic ties with other nations and in return the commercial aspect of the nation was being installed. The slaves are seen as the most efficient laborers who tirelessly worked and their efforts even though forced gave the best results. The slaves were tasked with the responsibility of planting and harvesting thousands of pounds of cotton. The bodies of these slaves were stretched and served as the largest asset that America possessed at that particular time. They were tasked with the responsibility of maintain the country’s main export and as the production of the cotton increased due to the efficiency of the slaves the profits from the sale of the crop also skyrocketed and placed the United Nations into a position of the leading economies in the world.

The slave’s works on the cash crop plantation such as the tobacco, cotton and the sugar cane. There is an elaborate indication that the slavery was very fruitful to the prosperity of America. The transcript is important in todays’ history as it shows the connection between capitalism, and slavery in the United States. For the longest time the other side of slavery had not been brought to the lime light. It was only seen as being a cruel act which it still is, but the slaves single handedly set up an entire economy that was up and running and sustained itself for decades on end.

It is important to learn this history as it sheds light on how things came to be and the contribution of the slaves in the development of the nation. It is clear that necessity is the mother of all inventions and it shows in this podcast. The efforts of the slaves led to the production of a lot of the cash crops that were exported and the income obtained injected back to the business leading to the economic advancements in America.
