SUBDOMAIN 211.2 – CLINICAL MICROBIOLOGY LABORATORY

Competency 211.2.1: Structure and Characteristics of Microorganisms – The graduate recognizes types and characteristics of microorganisms, performs biochemical tests, and recognizes principles of osmosis.
Competency 211.2.9: Techniques and Procedures – The graduate uses appropriate techniques or procedures for interacting with microorganisms in a clinic, laboratory, or community setting; utilizes basic laboratory techniques for identifying microorganisms; demonstrates proper laboratory techniques in microbiology, including sterile technique, staining techniques, aseptic technique, and chemical indicators; and recognizes types of culture media and when to use each.

Objective 211.2.1-01: Perform the Methyl Red, Voges-Proskauer biochemical test in a laboratory setting.
Objective 211.2.1-03: Recognize variations in how specified organisms metabolize glucose.
Objective 211.2.9-19: Employ a specified chemical indicator in a laboratory setting.

Test. Be sure to read the entire experiment and organize time, materials, and workspace before beginning. Remember to review the safety sections and wear goggles when working with chemicals.

In this task you will generate cultures of E. coli and S. epidermidis and, following the protocol, perform the MRVP test on both.

Task:

Upon completion of the lab, write a brief essay (suggested length of 12 pages) in which you:

A. Explain what the methyl red test determines.

B. Explain what the Voges-Proskauer test determines.

C. Discuss which of your organisms, if any, fermented glucose.

D. Discuss which of your organisms, if any, produced measurable acidic by-products.

E. Explain why organisms would have different biochemical pathways to metabolize glucose.

F. When you use sources, include all in-text citations and references in APA format.
