Annotated Bibliography

bibliography is a list of sources (books, journals, Web sites, periodicals, etc.) one has used for researching a topic. An annotation is a summary and/or evaluation. Therefore, an annotated bibliography includes a summary and/or evaluation of each of the sources.

For each of your 8-10 sources included on the annotated bibliography, you will write 5-7 sentences (or about 100 words each for at least three full pages in total; if you have 8 annotations but less than three pages, add more to meet or exceed the three pages) that will include the following:

  • Summary: What are the main arguments? What is the point of this book or article? What topics are covered? If someone asked what this article/book is about, what would you say?
  • Assess: After summarizing a source, it may be helpful to evaluate it. Is it a useful source? How or why? What are its inherent biases if any? What is the goal of this source? How does it compare or converse with other sources in your bibliography? Is the information reliable/credible? Why or why not?
  • Reflect/Employ: Once you’ve summarized and assessed a source, you need to ask how it fits into your research. How will this source be helpful to you? How will it help you shape your argument/How can you use this source in your research project?

Why should I write an annotated bibliography?

To learn about your topic: Writing an annotated bibliography is excellent preparation for a research project. Just collecting sources for a bibliography is useful, but when you have to write annotations for each source, you’re forced to read/assess each source more carefully. You begin to read more critically instead of just collecting information. At the professional level, annotated bibliographies allow you to see what has been done in the literature and where your own research or scholarship can fit. To help you formulate a thesis: Every good research paper is an argument. The purpose of research is to state and support a thesis. So a very important part of research is developing a thesis that is debatable, interesting, and current. Writing an annotated bibliography can help you gain a good perspective on what is being said about your topic. By reading and responding to a variety of sources on a topic, you’ll start to see what the issues are, what people are arguing about, and you’ll then be able to develop your own point of view.

To help other researchers: Extensive and scholarly annotated bibliographies are sometimes published. They provide a comprehensive overview of everything important that has been and is being said about that topic. You may not ever get your annotated bibliography published, but as a researcher, you might want to look for one that has been published about your topic.

Sample MLA annotation for one source:

Renner, Stanley. “‘Red hair, very red, close curling’: Sexual Hysteria, Physiognomical Bogeymen, and the ‘Ghosts’ in The Turn of the Screw.” In Henry James: The Turn of the Screw. Ed. Peter G. Beidler. Boston: Bedford Books, 1995. 223-241. Print.

Renner, a professor of Modern American literature with a focus on Henry James, asserts that what has previously been considered a supernatural event in James’ Turn of the Screw is actually a psychological one. According to Renner, James was in fact using the psychosis of the governess to comment on repressive Victorian sexual ideals and their effects on individuals. Renner uses biography to show that James would have been familiar with “sexual hysteria,” but the more successful part of the article is his careful analysis of physiognomical stereotyping in the Victorian Era, which will help me to understand and apply this concept to my reading of X text. His central argument effectively links the onset of the governess’s sexual hysteria and hallucination with the influence of Victorian assumptions about character and physical appearance. This text provides a solid psychoanalytical approach to understanding texts from this time period and will help me understand how to apply this theoretical approach to [a different text altogether, whatever that might be].

Other samples can be found in your textbook in Chapter 5.FINAL RESEARCH PROJECT

Your final project for this course is another research-based argument but includes two other components that lead up to the final paper: a research plan and an annotated bibliography. Each component is worth a different amount towards your final grade as indicated below.

The Annotated Bibliography

A bibliography of your initial sources (8-10) with annotations including: 1) a brief summary(what is this source about? Thesis and key ideas), 2) assess/evaluation (why is this a credible source?), and 3) reflect on intended use in the context of your argument (what will YOU did with or how will you use this source?). Annotations must be at least 100 words in length eachand the annotated bibliography must be at least three full pages.

A Research-Based Proposal Argument

Write an eight to ten (8-10) minimum page proposal argument as a formal research paper, using researched data/information for development and support. You must begin by identifying a problem (of any kind, practical or policy related) that you think you can work towards solving in some way (think awareness campaigns, letter to politician or o
