Social Policy 2 Policy Analysis Assignment
Overview: The Policy Analysis Assignment is divided into three distinct, but integrated, components. They are as follows:
Students will work in groups of three to analyze a specific section of policy or legislation that relates to the client population or social issue. Using specific criteria, the group will identify a gap or weakness or disadvantage in selected section or subsection of the policy. Based on this analysis the group will develop a recommendation to address the problem area identified. The recommendation must include an implementation strategy for the recommendation. The group will present their policy recommendation and implementation strategy in class. These presentations will occur in Weeks 11 and 12 of the semester should be between 5-7 minutes. All group members will be expected to participate in the presentation. If time permits, the class may ask questions at the end of each presentation.

DISCRIMINATION AGAINST, PEOPLE WITH DISABILITY (PHYSICAL AND /OR MENTAL), IN THE CANADIAN WORKPLACE. ANSWER ALL QUESTIONS.
Group Member #1- The social problem the program/policy addresses. Present evidence and data on the nature and scope of the problem (severity, number of people affected, people most affected).
What are the social problems underlying the issue?
How many people are affected?
Does the policy have different effects on different people?
What are the current policies that address the problem?
Describe the policies in terms of these four questions- Who gets? What do they get? How do they get it? Who pays for it?
Group Member #2- The historical components of the policy in Toronto/Ontario/Canada. Compare the policy at least two other jurisdictions.
If your policy is at the municipal level, 2 other municipalities, provincial, 2 other provinces and federal 2 other countries.
If the policy is federal but administered provincially (YJA) please discuss with your instructor.
What are the goals and the objectives of the policy?
How are they implemented?
Discuss the social values implicit in the policy/program/service.
Compare and contrast policy differences and similarities
Group Member#3- Identify the benefits and services provided through the policy. Eligibility criteria (residency, age, income, etc.), overview of application, referral process (walk-in, online, etc.), barriers to service, administration and funding of policy/program
Who are the major stakeholders, the policy’s supporters and opponents?
What are the advantages and disadvantages of the current policies?
Identify the strengths and areas for improvement of the policy/program/service.
ALL GROUP MEMBERS- Recommendations for policy change based on gaps, weaknesses and disadvantages of the current policy/program. What will be different from the existing policy? What affect will the new policy have on the population it is intended to serve? How will this policy be implemented? What are the potential advantages and disadvantages of the policy change?
Develop policy recommendation to address a current disadvantage. Identify potential disadvantages of these recommendations.
Develop a strategy to implement the policy recommendation
Identify potential revenue sources
Create a communication tool that to inform stakeholders of the policy change and implementation strategy.
