Our test states, “Qualitative research studies require the capture of accurate and consistent measurements using the appropriate type of scale” (Malec & Newman, 2013). When determining the relationship between conceptual variables and numbers on a quantitative measure, there are four different measurement scales to choose from: nominal, ordinal, interval and ratio (Malec & Newman, 2013). This is also known as scaling variables. Nominal measurement is used to label members of a group that share a common value or share a characteristic (Malec & Newman, 2013). An example of a nominal scale is religion, labeling a group of people with the same beliefs as Mormon. Nominal scales cannot be used for mathematical calculations and are known as qualitative scales (Malec & Newman, 2013). An ordinal scale is used when ranking a conceptual variable (Malec & Newman, 2013). An example of this is ranking Olympic athletes in the order they finish their competition. Interval scales are used when numbers represent equal intervals and allow researchers to add, subtract, and compute averages (Malec & Newman, 2013). An example of this is credit scores, the order and difference between the scores is meaningful and the range is the same for all people of 300-850 (Graphpad, 2019). Lastly, ratio scales are interval scales that also have a true zero point and possible absence of conceptual variables (Malec & Newman, 2013). Ratio scales work well when measuring pulse or length.

FILLER TEXTMaking smart measurement selection is the easiest way to decrease error variance and increase validity (Malec & Newman, 2013). The nominal scale is commonly used when measuring variables with categories that do not have a natural order or ranking such as blood type (graphpad, 2019). Ordinal scales are commonly used to measure variables that need to be ranked but the difference between the rankings is irrelevant, such as education levels (graphpad, 2019). A ratio variable has the same characteristic of an interval variable, and also has a clear definition of 0.0, like temperature (graphpad, 2019). I found classifying certain variables the most challenging because there are so many variables in existence, it can sometimes be difficult to determine which scale would be the most accurate.
