Slavery in Virginia 1619-1705

Slavery in the United States was introduced by the colonist British and Virginia was one of the states which were highly affected. Between 1629 and 1705 there were good laws in the state of Virginia which took care of slaves until 1705 when slaves could be tortured and even killed, this state made whites more important than blacks. This paper therefore seeks to discuss the state of slavery in Virginia from the year 1629 to 1705.

Even though in Virginia before 1705 it was easy for a slave to be free after 5 years of attaining the age of 18 this changed drastically when the laws of 1905 were enacted and it became a very difficult time for the black people in Virginia. Therefore the relationship between African and white Americans was not very good before 1705 however it became worse after the rules were set and the Africans had to do everything for the whites. In fact they were supposed to be beaten, treated badly, overworked and worst of all they could even be killed and no one was to ask for them. Therefore this led to a deterioration of the relationship between whites and blacks. The statutes that were enacted during the 1705 portrayed that Africans were not human enough while whites were full human beings and were given privileges.

Even though women were generally not considered for most of the works which and duties, the laws of Virginia made the situation worse by presenting women in a certain way that they were just servants and assistants and not really any important to the state (Courtney, 2015). However even though this was true, most of the white women still had privileges and in fact black women were the people who were treated in the worse manner because of their nature of being women and being black. Still they were seen as not human enough by the different many whites including both men and women.

During the 1705 statutes the change in law affected religion in a great manner. This is because before 1705 Christians could not be enslaved. However with the change in law Christians could be enslaved and they could be dealt with in anyway which the other slaves could be treated. This was mainly because the whites despised Africans and generally any black man so much such that it did not matter whether they are Christian or not and therefore where there was a black person they had to be made a slave.

Men have always been an important part of any society. However in the case of Virginia state men were not equal and blacks were called boys whether they were old or young as they served the whites. This was a bad situation since before these men could become slaves until the age of 19 after which they could work for 5 years then they were allowed to be free (Courtney, 2015). However with the laws of 1705 the slaves and the black men specifically had to deal with being slaves again

In conclusion, slavery was a very evil practice and it hurt blacks very much. It can be said that the same slavery mind is what has grown into systemic racism of today and therefore it becomes very difficult for the different merge and work together as it should be.
