Self-Management: Leadership Competency: Self-Management
Introduction
In the first few weeks of this course, you learned about psychological perspectives of leadership, leadership theories and approaches, and a variety of contexts from which leaders emerge. Youre learning thus far will provide you with a solid foundation as you consider specific leadership competences (self-management, cognitive adeptness, interpersonal adeptness, and organizational acumen) and leadership development strategies over the next several weeks. As you learn about specific leadership competencies and leadership development strategies, be sure to keep the psychological perspectives of leadership in mind. Also, consider how each of the leadership competencies and leadership development strategies is rooted in psychology.
This week, you will explore self-management as a leadership competency. A leaders ability to self-manage is the foundation of his or her credibility. Consider the following questions as you complete this weeks assignments: Are you aware of how others perceive you? How do you think your actions and behaviors affect others? What ethical principles might guide your leadership decisions and behaviors?
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this week, you should be able to:
Analyze the importance of self-awareness in effective leadership
Evaluate and justify strategies to enhance or expand self-awareness
Compare principles of ethical leadership with principles from the APA Ethics Code
Explain how the adoption of ethical principles contributes to self-management
Application: Ethics
Self-management begins with self-awareness and then extends to ethical behaviors. How leaders manage their relationships, time, priorities, communication, and health is in part guided by their ethical principles. Think for a moment about your own values and ethics. Consider how each guides your behaviors and your ability to manage yourself.
To prepare for this assignment:
Review Chapter 16 in the course text, Leadership: Theory and Practice. Pay particular attention to the principles of ethical leadership.
Review the general principles listed in the APA Ethics Code. Think about how each might apply to leadership.
Consider how the principles of ethical leadership are similar to and different from the general principles in the APA Ethics Code.
Reflect on how at least one principle of ethical leadership and one general principle in the APA Ethics Code might contribute to self-management.
The assignment: (1-2 pages)
Compare (similarities and differences) the principles of ethical leadership with the general principles in the APA Ethics Code. Explain any conclusions you might draw from your comparison.
Explain how at least one ethical principle of leadership and one general principle in the APA Ethics Code might contribute to effective self-management and why. Be specific.
Support your Application Assignment with specific references to all resources used in its preparation. You are asked to provide a reference list only for those resources not included in the Learning Resources for this course.
