ASSIGNMENT 6
Retaining your commentary on the film as the central focus, expand it into a critical essay on globalization where you situate the film within the broader context of how globalization impacts gender and work.
® Genre: Expand your film commentary into a critical essay along the same lines as Parts 1 and 2 of Assignment 4 (where you situated Kristof’s work within broader problems of representation of sex trafficking).
® 5 pages double spaced (one page more than Assignment 5).
What you are expected to do:
- Expand your discussion beyond Maquilapolis to situate the film within the broader context of gender, work, and globalization.
- Connections and comparisons between the context of this film and the context of migration for domestic work as discussed in lecture.
- IMPORTANT: Do not simply “add on†a new page or new paragraphs to Assignment 5. Rewrite Assignment 5 to add in the broader context. This means rewriting Assignment 5 with a broader framework in mind, writing a new intro and conclusion, and drawing connections to domestic work. It might mean shortening some parts of Assignment 5, writing new transitions, removing some examples or including different ones.
- Incorporate peer and instructor/TA feedback to rewrite Assignment 5 to achieve greater clarity in concepts, arguments, and writing.
- No reflection paragraphs needed on your writing process this time.

- Demonstrate the ability to write in two important genres: A film commentary and a broader critical essay building upon and beyond your film commentary.
- Demonstrate engagement with the course material.
- Demonstrate the ability to summarize and synthesize the assigned film, reading and lecture to write a concise and strong commentary and critical essay with supporting examples.

- Please continue to follow all of the Writing Tips and Strategies we have covered in class so far, from the assigned writing text “Writing in College†(Parts 1-5), the “Writing Tips†document posted on Canvas, and the writing tips on Introduction, Conclusion, and Transitions.
- Implement the writing strategies emphasized in lecture and sections.
- Improve on the writing strategies you have used for previous assignments.
- Pay attention to the genres you are being asked to write in. For Assignment 5, skim the genre example provided, and for Assignment 6, follow the same genre as Assignment 4, Parts 1 and 2.
