Question 1:

Clients cannot always solve their own problems, that is why they are in therapy and need help from the therapist. There are certain things that a client can do to help themselves but it all depends on the therapist. If the therapist creates an atmosphere during therapy that shows the client that they can self-explore many parts of their experiences, then there are certain things a client can do help themselves rather than the therapist. As long as the therapist shows empathy towards their client’s experiences by reflecting on their own experiences and sharing it with the client, then the client can feel better and take more steps in helping themselves as well.

Question 2:

I am very confident that I will be able to be genuine in my interaction with my client. Therapist and client’s relationship is very important for therapy and it has to be genuine. Once you are genuine, speak from your own experiences, give examples of your experiences to the client, then the client will feel that the therapy relationship is genuine and will be even more open to talk about their issues in the past, present and what they are trying to avoid in the future.

Question 3: I want to create a professional and friendly relationship and environment for my client so they can feel comfortable around me to tell anything that is bothering them and that will help in getting my client better. The characteristics I deem most important are honestly, trust, showing empathy and understanding my client’s issues and then helping them solve these issues.

According to an article on Vistas Online, therapists use different types of creative techniques to help their clients because it helps the therapist help their client from many different perspectives where they can pick and choose the affective therapy needed. This will also help the client see that the therapist is using different techniques and not just the same old routine to assist the client which in return will give comfort to the client and help them open up more about their experiences.

POST 2:

How would you respond to Stan’s feelings of self-doubt? Could you enter his frame of reference and respond to an emphatic manner that lets Stan know you hear his pain and struggle without needing to give advice or suggestions?

One thing that I have learned about working with clients is that when they are showing signs of self-doubt, they are looking for validation. It is up to the counselor to respond on an emphatic level to ensure them that you understand what they are going through, and show that you resonate. I believe that you cannot not respond to the clients feeling of self-doubt, because they came to you for advice and guidance. I would help Stan using the Adlerian technique of early memory recollection. I would help him understand his self-worth and see that his is making progress. I would use his early memories of the good things to help him make goals that are oriented around enhancing his sense of self ans quality of life.

How would you describe Stan’s deeper struggles? What sense do you have on his world?

Stan’s struggles from feeling insignificant. His ego has been placed into a hole, and he needs help bringing it back out. his relationship with his parents or the lack thereof, plays a huge roll in how he has been raised, and his social life with people–especially women. He feels inferior to his siblings because his parents never made him feel like he has never been enough. Because of how he was nurtured, he has grown to seek validation from any outside influences. His social anxiety and self-doubt has gotten the best of him, but he has room to learn and grow. I believe that he shows signs of acute depression, but with the continuous use of his therapist, and their advice, he could make a 360 degree turn around with no problem.

To what extent do you think that the relationship you would develop with Stan would help him move forward in a positive direction? What if anything might get in your way-either with him or in yourself-in establishing a therapeutic relationship?

Being able to resonate with someone or feel as though someone understands you, can make a big difference in your life. I believe that my professional relationship with Stan will help him be able to build friendship and relationships that are fruitful to his life. This will help him develop self-responsibility and a higher sense of self. Self-responsibility is closely linked with Adler’s declarations of three essential human needs for human development, which are to be safe, to belong, and to be significant (Day, 2018). Making Stan aware of this would be essential as well because it will help ease his feelings of self-doubt.
