Reflection of NSTA Position Statement

The National Science Teaching Association (NSTA) gives both national and international leadership in science education. This is done through taking note of the standards and qualities of good science education that are stipulated in the form of position statements employed in improving science education at all levels. The position statement that I agreed with the most is the one to do with the inclusion of gender equity in science education. The NSTA strongly posits that gender equity is crucial for science advancement. I agree with this assertion as equity goes a long way in attaining global scientific literacy. When there is gender equity, it means that no person is excluded in access and participation in science advancement of science. Essentially, this gender equity standard ensures that learners of all sex, gender, expression and identity or sexual orientation-regardless of ethnic or racial ability or background are supported, empowered, challenged, and granted full access to being successful learners of science. I think that promoting gender equity in science education ensures talents from both genders are included which gets rid of the stereotypes that STEM subjects are a tough domain that should only be taken by boys. Vividly speaking, I did not come across any idea that I did not like while reading through the various position statements outlined by the NSTA on matters science education. In my viewpoint, all the position statements were articulated by the team of science educators and other national experts that were tasked with the responsibility of developing them.

The information provided in the NSTA position statement is relevant to my future classroom in various ways. For instance, moving forward, I now understand the importance of gender equity and its inclusion in teaching science. Because of the information, I have interacted with while reading through the position statements have opened my eye on the diversity of science as a learning subject, I have also learned that a lot goes into the planning of science education. In the future, I will be more aware in the; learning process as I will recognize the application of some of these NSTA position statements in the course of learning.
