For this week’s blog post, I want you to select one of the three readings from this week, “Only Daughter” “How to Tame a Wild Tongue,” or “Mother Tongue.” I want you to do some internet research about the author and then re-read the narrative. In 300-350 words, I want you to be able to make connections between the author’s background and their literacy narrative. Part of this research might in fact include figuring out where Sandra Cisneros went to school and how that relates to her writing in English and Spanish and to her Chicana identity. Or for example, how does (if it does) Anzaldúa’s lesbian identity come through and how does such an element inform our reading of her narrative? I want you to quote from the narrative you choose and explain how the quote’s meaning is enhanced by the new information you’ve encountered. Please find an article (can be a magazine article, newspaper, or scholarly) and cite it in your discussion. This is your chance to learn about the people you are reading and how these narratives are very personal, that reading, writing, and speaking skills are very personal. Audre Lorde has infamously said that the personal is always political. I want you all to be able to understand these readings better and in order to do that, sometimes you need to do research. If you’re unsure about “How to Tame a Wild Tongue,” look up Chicano history so you have a better sense of her stakes in writing the piece.
