Effects on Business

Provide economic, psychological, and organizational reasons as to why a company would want to ensure a workplace offers effective interventions/treatments for mental impairments. Explain why mental health issues in the workplace are important considerations for management, consultants, and employees. Referencing this week’s articles, provide solid information to support your discussion. Provide a resource (other than a .com website or course materials) to further substantiate your ideas. Respond to at least two of your classmates’ postings by Day 7.

Normal vs. Abnormal Behavior

Utilizing independent research and your own experience, explain how we determine the difference between normal and abnormal behavior in the workplace. Using the articles you read this week, provide solid information to support your discussion. In your responses to at least two peers, provide additional methods for determining normal and abnormal behavior in the workplace (other than those stated by your peers). Respond to at least two of your classmates’ postings by Day 7.

Components of a Healthy Culture

Utilizing independent research and your own experience, how can a healthy culture aid an organization in accomplishing its goals? Provide at least one scholarly source in addition to the course material to substantiate your ideas. In your responses to at least two of your classmates’ postings by Day 7, provide at least two additional components of a healthy culture in an organizational workplace.

Balance vs. Imbalance

Describe the positive results of organizational stressors. Differentiate between perceived and actual stressors. In your life, what actions, priorities, and behaviors are used effectively to contribute to balance? What actions, priorities, and behaviors lead to imbalance? Several of the articles you read this week provide information helpful to this discussion. Specifically, Bond and Bunce (2003), Cooper (2006), and Nelson and Hitt (1992) offer insightful thoughts on the balance between work and personal lives. Respond to at least two of your classmates’ postings by Day 7.

Psychopathology: Symptoms, Treatment, & Intervention

Select one disorder from the following psychopathology and investigate current research:

a. Depression

b. Bipolar

c. Generalized anxiety

d. Social anxiety

e. Specific phobia

f. Panic disorder

g. PTSD

Then, in three paragraphs: 

· Describe behaviors in the workplace associated with the selected disorder.

· Explain treatment and interventions currently used (medical and nonmedical, at work and at home).

· How can leadership in companies help those with these disorders?

Organizational Role

What is the difference between treatment and intervention? What role can organizational leadership have in the implementation of treatment modalities and intervention techniques? What role does the individual employee have in the effective implementation of treatment modalities and intervention techniques? Respond to at least two of your classmates’ postings by Day 7.

Part 2: Psychopathology: Symptoms, Treatment, & Intervention

From the following psychopathology, select one disorder and investigate current research:

a. Schizophrenia 

b. Antisocial personality and Borderline personality disorders

c. Eating disorders

d. Traumatic brain injuries

e. Insomnia

For your selected disorder, address the following in three paragraphs:

a. Describe behaviors in the workplace associated with the selected disorder.

b. Explain treatment and interventions currently used (medical and non-medical, at work and at home).

c. How can leadership in companies help those with the disorder?

Substance Abuse

Why is it important for management to be able to identify symptoms of substance abuse in the workplace? Describe potential negative effects of substance abuse during personal hours that might affect the company. Why are workplace substance abuse interventions so important? What legal concerns do managerial staff need to be aware of when employees may be abusing substances? Respond to at least two of your classmates’ postings by Day 7.

Violence in the Workplace

Why do you think there has been more workplace violence during the last 30 years than in all previous years? What constitutes workplace aggression? How can an indirect witness to violence be affected? What affect do personality traits have on aggressive behavior? How can a company assess risk factors for violent behaviors? Provide research findings from at least one peer-reviewed study of workplace aggression. Respond to at least two of your classmates’ postings by Day 7.

Leadership and Culture

The answer to this three-part discussion should be in three succinct paragraphs. Provide one scholarly source outside of course materials to substantiate your ideas. 

Through independent research and experience:

· Provide a description of three steps leaders may choose to incorporate into daily supervisory and managerial duties that promote a healthy organizational culture. 

· Describe three inter-personal behaviors leaders can take to promote healthy organizational culture. 

· Besides those named to leadership position, who contributes to organizational culture? How so?

Interview

Complete the summary of the interview you began in the Week 5 Learning Activity. You were to interview an individual who self-identifies with one of the mental conditions described by Thomas & Hersen in Part III.

The interviewee may or may not be employed at the time of the interview. Explain to the person that you will be writing a summary of the interview for a university assignment, but will include no identifying information on him or her or on the company. Ask the interviewee to provide you with a description of how the condition affects him or her in the workplace. Ask what, if any, are effects on work performance and relationships in the workplace because of the condition.

What intervention strategies have been offered to the interviewee in the workplace? What would the person like the organization or management to offer? 

Prepare your summary to post in Week 6. Write a summary of the interview, without giving the interviewee’s name. Include the condition, age, and gender of the interviewee. Provide a general description of the work environment without including any specific identifying information about the company. Include research from scholarly sources regarding workplace interventions related to this condition in providing additional ideas for treatment and/or interventions the company could implement to help others in the same situation. 

Respond to at least two of your classmates’ postings. Provide at least one additional internet or scholarly source related to your peers’ postings in your responses.
