The American Public Health Association (APHA), World Health Organization (WHO), and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) all have their definitions for public health. The APHA definition of public health promotes and protects the health of people and the communities where they live, learn, work and play (APHA, 2019). The WHO definition Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity (WHO,2019). Lastly, the CDC definition of Public health is the science of protecting and improving the health of people and their communities. This work is achieved by promoting healthy lifestyles, researching disease and injury prevention, and detecting, preventing and responding to infectious diseases (CDC, 2019). All these organizations believe in one thing protecting the health of the people.

The definition that best represents the public health discipline in the 21st century is the CDC, I look at them as a branch of medicine dealing with public health, including hygiene, epidemiology, and disease prevention. Public health is the science and art of preventing disease, prolonging life and promoting human health. This requires organized efforts and informed choices of society, organizations, public and private, communities and individuals. The public health system focuses on prevention through population-based health promotion-those public services and interventions which protect entire populations from illness, disease, and injury-and protection (APHA, 2019).

A framework for public health action is the 5-tier pyramid. The public health pyramid visually depicts the potential impact of different types of public health intervention. The 5-tier pyramid best describes the impact of different types of public health interventions and provides a framework to improve health (Frieden, 2010). The fifth tier (base of pyramid) indicating interventions with the greatest potential impact are efforts to address socioeconomic determinants of health, for example, poverty reduction and education. Fourth tier public health interventions that change the context for health, example access to health care. Third-tier clinical interventions that require limited contact but confer long-term protection, for example, immunizations. Second-tier ongoing direct clinical care, for example, access to prolonged medical care. First-tier (top of pyramid) health education and counseling, example education and need for care.
