Summative Presentation – Student Guide
Learning Outcomes assessed: S2, S3, S4, S6, S7
Weighting 50% of Speaking Grade
10% of Overall EAP Grade
Task description:
You will be asked to prepare for and deliver a presentation on a topic you have covered in
one of your subject classes.
Your presentation must last between 6 and 10 minutes and it should include:
? your own opinion
? supported with examples from sources you have read
? an acknowledgement of the opposite point of view
? a counter argument
? a repetition (as a paraphrase) of your original opinion
It must NOT be a presentation you have already done for EAP or any other subject.
In addition, you will be asked questions at the end of your presentation. This also forms
part of your assessment.
Task submission guidelines:
? On your first slide you should include your name, IM number, group, date, and topic
of the presentation.
? Before your presentation you should email your teacher a copy of your slides.
? You will do your final assessed individual presentation during the following period:

July. Please check the exact date of your presentation on the notice
boards – due to the tight schedule, and the fact that your presentation will be marked by two EAP
teachers, once agreed, you WILL NOT be allowed to change your presentation time. If you are late or
absent without medical evidence you will not be able to do your presentation at another time.
The following will result in a grade U:
? The presentation is clearly lacking in adequate preparation.
? The student is reading the majority of the presentation from a script (this includes reciting
or reading from the screen).
? The audience are not informed or engaged.
? May be significantly under/over-length (you will be stopped at 10 minutes and asked to
quickly conclude if your presentation is over-running).
Suggested Topics (If you wish to do your presentation on a topic not listed below, please check
with your EAP teacher first)
Politics
? Proportional representation should be adopted for UK Westminster elections.
? Tony Blair’s Governments had a mainly positive impact on British politics.
? Margaret Thatcher’s governments had a mainly negative impact on British politics.
Economics
? The UK should remain outside the Eurozone in order to ensure economic
performance.
? Creating a more flexible workforce would lead to a stronger economy.
? A national minimum wage brings more disadvantages than advantages to a country’s
economy.
Business Studies
? Firms cannot survive without a presence on the World Wide Web.
? Profit is not the only indicator of a successful company.
