Scenario:  Kim is a 49-year old married Asian American female, living with her spouse and two adolescent children in the “Little Saigon” area of Orange County, California. She and her spouse moved from Vietnam 4 years ago with their children and have strong cultural ties to the local Vietnamese community. She works part-time in a jewelry store. Her spouse works full-time and their financial situation is good. She is slender and eats a healthy low-fat diet. She has seen a therapist in the past because of “my anger” toward her spouse for his infidelity. Two years ago, she was diagnosed with breast cancer. At that time, a biopsy was performed to confirm the diagnosis. Surgery was suggested but she declined, relying on herbal remedies and acupuncture to cope with the cancer. Since the diagnosis, she has become physically weaker but describes few other changes. The lump she can feel in her breast is not painful and she believes that this is a “good sign.” Her belief is that the lump is a sign of “poison” in her body.
