A  Rousseau

  In his Discourse on the Origins of Inequality Rousseau is attempting a new theory of human nature.  What are the most important changes that take place in human nature according to him?

 

  In the Social Contract Rousseau puts forward the idea that individual freedom and democratic community depend upon each other. How is this idea expressed in the notion of the sovereignty of a general will?

 

 

B  Marx

  For Marx, although capitalism is preparing its own demise, it is also laying the foundations for a better form of society. What are the important or crucial economic, social and political ways in which capitalism lays the foundations for socialism?

  What does Marx mean by the alienation of labour and how is alienation found in what he calls the fetishism of commodities?

  According to Marx’s theory of historical materialism the transition to a new social order is a function of certain tensions within society, not simply an accident or fate.  What is his general understanding of such tensions, and how does this apply to a possible transition from capitalism to socialism?

  Why, according to Mill, is individual liberty such a good thing? What are his principal arguments in favour of maximizing such liberty? Does his  use of the distinction between self- and other-regarding acts weaken his case?

 

  “J.S. Mill is caught between the need to defend the individual against social and political power on the one hand, and the need to protect capitalist economic development on the other. His idea of liberty is crafted with that in mind.” Discuss, giving reasons for agreeing or disagreeing with the statement above.
