The PMU’s six competencies are considered central in all the degree programs and are therefore actively pursued through inclusion of the competencies in every course syllabi. The six PMU competencies include communication, technological competence, critical thinking and problem solving, professional competence, teamwork and leadership.

PMU’s six competencies prepare learners in different areas of human knowledge, enriching, and developing intelligence to explore innovative methodologies.

According to Christians (2013), communication is regarded as effectiveness in communicating in both English and Arabic in different environments that include professional and social status. Additionally, there are technological competence which includes the capability of using latest technology in acquiring information, pass information, provide solution to challenges and finally produce results. Teamwork is another competency which promotes effectiveness and accomplishment of tasks while working with others. Also, leadership involves the act of being informed, active and responsible leaders in family, community and every other place where leadership may be required is required in the society. Professional competence is the ability to perform tasks responsibly both in locally and internationally.

Communication is one of the most important competencies of PMU and it involves written, oral and nonverbal communication. A student should be able to write and engage in discussions or even n pass information effectively. A student should be able to transact by communicating ideas based on concurrent sharing. A professional should be able to listen to both subordinates and seniors. This will help in executing duties effectively. By acquiring good communication skills, an individual may effectively understand the information passed.

Christians (2013), explains that use of technology is very important due to the current nature and quick advancement in every sector. Technology is almost applicable in every area of life and professional fields thus acting as an inescapable hallmark of the modern society. Being that communication is vital; technology has positively influenced communication by making it more easy, interactive and quick. Keeping up with the ever changing technology is crucial in improving an individual’s performance and even the general organizations’ operations.

According to Christians (2013), PMU provides students with the superior technology infrastructure that equips them to effectively perform flexible, reliable and safe operations. The university offers high class resources that aid in strategic amalgamation of instructional technology in various facets of the institution’s curriculum. Technology is also important in increasing productivity of an individual by enabling one to operate more effectively and efficiently. Professionalism attributes include specialized knowledge, competency, honesty and integrity, respect, accountability and self-regulation.

Critical thinking includes clear understanding of the logical linking between different ideas then identification, construction and evaluation of arguments. A critical thinker is able to detect inconsistencies and other common mistakes that may be incorporated in reasoning then solve issues systematically. PMU understands the importance of enhancing work processes and improving social institutions through critical thinking. Analysis, inference, self-regulation and discrimination are some of the critical thinking skills.

According to Christians (2013), teamwork includes coming together in a group to achieve a common objective and is vital for every profession although it can be very challenging. Teamwork brings a lot of competency and efficiency since people’s prominence is brought to play. Teamwork facilitates problem solving and enhances speed in which a task is accomplished. It further promotes healthy competition and creates relationship amongst employees as well as appreciating everyone’s uniqueness. Important skills for teamwork include listening, questioning, persuading, respecting, helping, sharing and participating.

Also, leadership is the final competency that enables an individual to transform goals into accomplishments through connecting people to tasks. Leadership qualities are critical both at work and any other social setting and it includes various styles such as authoritative, political, evaluative, participative and laissez-faire. For outstanding leadership, there are important skills required such as integrity, visionary, planning, decision making, adaptability, persuasion, coaching and development and communication skills.

PMU core competencies are consistent with the goals and objectives of PMU and acts as an additional benefit to students apart from the educational and academic benefits. The development of six distinctive competencies is aimed at improving employability and enhances flexibility for learners who would perhaps want to change their careers in future. All the degree programs offered in PMU ensures incorporation and recognition of all the competencies.
