PHASE III Analyzing My Topic (40 points)

PHASE III: Analyzing My Topic (40 points)

Due: Hard copy due in class on or before Tues. 3/27/18. Digital copy via Turnitin due by 10:50AM. Refer to the grading rubric in Turnitin for grading criteria.

This exercise is designed to help you through the process of analyzing what others have said about your research topic. Please type your answers to each question on this sheet, re-save the document with a new name, and then submit to Turnitin by the due date.

1. List the key topics of conversation surrounding your topic. You might include general and specific arguments, problems, issues, controversies, and proposed solutions. (You can number/bullet this list if you’d prefer.)

Health care equality

Social classes

LGBT health care

Women health care

Mental health

Health care plans

Health care fines

Race/Ethnicity/Religious beliefs

Limits on access to health care

2. Make a list data-driven questions you have about your topic that will help you to learn more about it. Answers to data-driven questions are not open to debate or opinion-based, so data-driven questions have clear or “factual” answers. (The following question is an example of a data-driven question because there’s a single, objective answer to it: “What are the state laws in California prohibiting human trafficking?” This question can easily be answered once the data has been located.)

List as many questions as needed.

What are health and health care disparities?

Why do health and health care disparities matter?

What is the status of the disparities today?

What are key initiatives to address disparities?

How has the ACA affected health care coverage disparities?

3. Make a list (numbered) of analytical questions you have about your selected topic. Answers to these questions may vary and are opinion-based, not factual, and several answers may be acceptable for each question. (For example, this is an analytical question: “How effective have California’s state laws been in preventing human trafficking?”)

List as many questions as needed.

What actions have been taken to make health care more accessible and beneficial to every sexuality, race, gender, and social class?

What are the main issues in health care equality?

What actions have been taken to make health care more affordable to avoid being fined? Why are you fined if you don’t have insurance?

Why is healthcare equality such a controversial topic?

Why be concerned about Equity?

4. Consider some of the analytical questions you have above (#3). Are there any questions you can answer or propose answers to? Write your responses to your numbered questions.

(Example in response to analytical question above: “From what I have read, I think that California’s state laws have been somewhat effective in preventing human trafficking. I say this because…”)

There are many activist and leaders fighting for more equal rights in health care, the access they have to it and their needs being met in an affordable way.

There are many issues on the equality of health care. Such as LGBT’s limited access to the health care they need, as well as women and their needs. Also, the limited access to those in the lower social class who may not be able to afford health care, different races, religions, and ethnicities also don’t have equal access. Another issue is people with mental issues and illnesses and the health care they are offered.

There are a few healthcare plans that supposedly offer affordable healthcare but only meet minimum basic needs that do not include the certain needs that may ne needed to the parties listed above. There is Obama care and Medicaid, but they are only accessible to those who meet certain requirements. So those ineligible for it but still cannot afford what’s offered are fined. Fines are in place due to insurance being made “affordable” yet if something so necessary were really made easily accessed and affordable to everyone, everyone would have it.

I believe the equality of health care is so controversial because everyone has their views and beliefs on what one should have access to, what should be covered etc. As taxpayers I understand why some may have such strong opinions, but we lack knowledge on matters that don’t pertain to us. Women have different medical needs than men, LGBT have certain medical needs they need met, as well as those with mental illness. Most of these needs aren’t covered under basic insurance, there’s more expenses outside of already paying for healthcare. People fail to realize that these aren’t chosen lifestyles, that there are certain needs that need to be met for different people, different situations and its not affordable or easily accessible as you would think.

I feel everyone should be concerned about equity when it comes to health care because even if it’s not a problem for you it is something everyone needs but not everyone is able to have due to so many different factors. I do feel these factors should be taken more into consideration because its not as black and white as some may think.
