divided by the time of travel.
d) Velocity: The speed and direction of motion of a moving body.
e) Acceleration: The rate of increase of speed or the rate of change of velocity
f) Momentum: A measure of the motion of a body equal to the product of its mass and velocity.

2. Explain the 5 physiological changes that occur with training.

Circulatory- The body increases blood flow to carry oxygen and nutrients to the working muscle cells, and
to carry excess CO2 out of the body.

Respiratory- The body increases the rate of respiration to expel the extra CO2 gas that is being produced by the
working muscle cells while they are preforming cellular respiration to create ATP.

Digestive- The body increases the rate of digestion in the body to break down the carbohydrates into glucose to
put it through cellular respiration to continue the extra production of ATP in the body.
3. What influence has modern technology had on the performance of athletes?
How have their techniques been modified, their equipment or apparatus altered and their clothing enhanced?

4. List the health-related and skill-related components of physical fitness.

Danger, Response, Airway, Breathing, CPR, Defibrillator
Give a brief explanation of these essential steps in assessing and managing a casualty. 5 marks
Danger: Check for any danger to yourself other people and the injured person.
Response: Check to see if there is any response from the patient ie are they conscious.
Airway: Check the patient’s airway to make sure there is no obstruction.
Breathing: Check for breathing: is chest rising and falling? Can you hear or feel air from mouth or nose?
CPR: If no breath is felt call 000 and start CPR immediately and continue until the ambulance arrives.
Defibrillator: If a defibrillator is available, apply it and follow the voice prompts.
6. In less critical circumstances the acronym STOP is used in injury management. What do these letters stand
for and why is this sequence of injury management used? 5 marks
Stop, Talk, Observe, Prevent further injury.
It is a standard and systematic way of approaching any injury. It involves asking questions, observing the
casualty and listening to the feedback given before taking further action.

7. In crisis management you may be required to do CPR.
a) What does this acronym mean you will be doing?
Cardiopulmonary resuscitation is a possible life saving first aid which is a combination of mouth to mouth
resuscitation and chest compressions that allows the delivery of oxygen and artificial blood circulation to a
person who is in cardiac arrest
b) How many compressions and breaths are required for adults, children and babies? 30 compressions to 2
breaths (the technique is slightly different in each case.)
