Wake Tech has proposed an initiative that will be voted on by all students in 2015. The plan
calls for the college to offer seventy-five percent of its classes in online-only format by 2018.
The college argues that the new program will save money in the long-run (leading to reduced
tuition) and emphasize practical knowledge, including science and math skills. According to the
proposal, “The shift toward online education is inevitable. By enacting this initiative, the college
will emphasize a curriculum based on hard skills, be able to more adequately measure student
success, and better prepare students for the technological workplace.” In a short essay, develop
a position in relation to the college’s proposal. Take a position and attempt to convince your
classmates to vote in accordance with it. Have a clear thesis, and use at least two sources we’ve
examined in class this semester (outside sources are permitted but not required). Make sure to
address the college’s claims. Note that there are multiple positions you could take here. You
can disagree with portions of the proposal and still urge a “yes” vote. You can agree with
portions of the proposal and still urge a “no” vote. Be thorough and clear, and make sure your
audience understands both your position and its underlying rationale.
