Within nursing many theories provide the model for practice and research. One example is Reed’s Self-Transcendence theory. In this theory “individuals who face increased vulnerability or mortality may acquire an increased capacity for self-transcendence and its positive influence on mental health and well-being” (DiNapoli et al, 2014, p. 91). The nurse, in this theory, functions to facilitate the enhancement of well-being through the disease experience (Smith and Parker, 2015, p.412). The Self-Transcendence theory, in its application to nursing practice can be viewed in various strategies; intrapersonal, interpersonal activities and transpersonal (Smith and Parker, 2015, p.415). Intrapersonal approaches assist the individual to integrate loss and change in one’s life by looking inward with the goal of finding the purpose of living (Smith and Parker, 2015, p.415).

     In a study of Multiple Sclerosis by JadidMilani et al (2015) patients involved in peer support groups facilitated by nurses showed an increase in quality of life and overall health (JadidMilani et al, 2015). Researchers utilized Reed’s theory to build the framework for the study and the variables of peer support and its effect on the participant’s well-being and quality of life. This qualified as the best theoretical framework for the study due to the qualitative nature and the variable of sense of wellbeing was being measured.

       This is one example of how self-transcendence practices help to internalize the health challenge with the support of others the goal of the group is the well-being of each participant. In facing challenges, self-transcendence can assist the patient in maintaining a constant sense of integrity along with well-being through their disease process (JadidMilani et al ,2015, p. 726).
