nuclear power accident and public health 200 words

Nuclear power plants operate worldwide with about 100 nuclear reactors operating in the U.S. The U.S. federal government maintains oversight of nuclear power plants through two agencies: NRC and FEMA. All nuclear power plants need to have an emergency response plan in the event of an accident prior to receiving a license to operate. There have been various nuclear incidents but one of the largest nuclear accidents occurred on 26 April 1986, at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in Ukraine.

Please answer the following:

  1. Does the United States’ emergency response plan have a process for managing a major nuclear disaster?
  2. Discuss the medical response preparedness plans in communities co-located with nuclear plants.
  3. Is your community at risk of a nuclear disaster?

ALL FORUMS

Initial Response: Initial responses should be no less than 200 words in length not including your reference(s) and supported by at least two references (aside from the textbook). Initial responses are due no later than 11:55 p.m. ET on Wednesday, Day 3 of each week. This allows time for other students to respond to your initial response. Please be aware that just “cutting and pasting” sections of articles (in lieu of writing an original initial post) is not acceptable and will negatively impact your grade.

Peer Responses: Students are required to respond to at least two (2) other student’s initial postings (and the instructor) with significant comments that have substance. Peer responses are due no later than 11:55 p.m. ET on Sunday, Day 7 of each week. All peer responses must be substantial and significant and should be no less than 100 words in length not including your reference(s) and supported by at least one reference (aside from the textbook). If possible, one of the responses to another’s work should be from an opposing viewpoint. Your response to your peers work should be engaging and informative with good substance (just stating “I agree…” is not acceptable). Your responses should contribute in a meaningful way to helping advance our knowledge of the topics the class explores. Your responses to another’s work should be posted as a sub-thread to the student’s original posting of whom you are commenting.

For all Forum activity, students are encouraged to use the APUS Online Library to search for references that help support their argument (in addition to textbook material). All posts should contribute and advance the class knowledge of the course themes. The Forum provides an opportunity for everyone to analyze work from many different perspectives.

Hello Marc,

I have no reason to be unfair to any student in my class. It is a privilege to be a teacher. I take the responsibility with all humility, dedication and sense of fairness. I was once a student, I do not take the responsibility of grading papers lightly or for granted.

I have posted the question for forum 5 and your response below. The primary reason you are not scoring the highest points you aimed for is that your responses are usually non-specific, they are generic. For example, to question #1 you were to state the community you referred to in your response (is it a city, county, state, ship or military base that you referred to as your community?), which agency in your community is responsible for the function, and what does the plan entails; but not tangentially referring to it – to include “communication”. The task was aimed to make the student research and have a first hand knowledge of the capability of their communities. FEMA is a national resource for all communities. Each community tailors its plan according to its resources and risks, (as contained in the annex to the EOP) so just quoting FEMA plan does not do justice to the question in terms of specific and adequate response to the question asked. The same critiques apply to questions #2 and #3.
