NOTECritical Reflection #3 is adding yet another layer to t

NOTE:Critical Reflection #3 is adding yet another layer to thecritical reflections you completed in modules 1 & 2 – this time focusing onanalyzing the study used as a reason to back up the author’s argument. A CHANGE: Iwant you to write three shortparagraphs for thisreflection: a summary, an analysis, and a response. BelowI’veincluded things that should be included in each of those paragraphs. Noticethis is a lot like what you completed in the first two reflections, only now you’reputting everything in paragraph form. REMEMBER: Wheninstructors ask you to read an article and write what you think, this isusually what they’re looking for. We’ll continue to add more as the modulesprogress. Chooseone of the articles below to read for yourreflection: “Toget rid of fat, don’t eat before workout”, by Maria Cheng, Associated Press:  http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/37492881/  (Links to an external site.)“ResearchSupports Medical Marijuana”, by Rick Weiss, The Washington Post:   http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/02/12/AR2007021201332.html (Links to an external site.) “ChocolateMilk Refuels Muscles After Workout”, by Charlene Laino, WebMD HealthNews:    http://www.webmd.com/fitness-exercise/news/20100604/chocolate-milk-refuels-muscles-after-workout (Links to an external site.)“Study:Ginkgo biloba has no effect on Alzheimer’s, dementia”, by Elizabeth Weise, USAToday:   http://www.usatoday.com/news/health/2009-12-30-ginkgo30_ST_N.htm  (Links to an external site.)For the article chosen, answer the following in paragraph form:Summary (The summary must be objective andthoroughly explain the argument from the author’s perspective)     1.  Givethe title and author of the article in the body of the paragraph to give creditwhere it is due.  (When referring back to the author in the article, usetheir last name or full name.  You are not on a first name basis withthem!       2.  What is the argument and conclusion of theissue according to the author?       3.  Explain, in depth, the study that was givenas a reason in support of the author’s conclusion.  Make sure toinclude sample size, who was involved in the study, the methods – or how thestudy was conducted, the data that was gathered, and any conclusions made bythe author and/or researcher.     NOTE:Makesure when summarizing that you do not copy and paste directly from the article. If you do, you will be docked points for plagiarism.  You may use shortquotes from the article, but the majority of it should be put in your ownwords. Think of the summary as if you were telling someone who had not read thearticle about it. Be precise in your telling so the reader can get an accuratepicture of the argument and study. Analysis of the Argumentand Study     1.  What do you think are the underlying value assumptions that drove theresearcher to conduct this study?       2.  Do you think the study was good enough to supportthe argument? Why or why not? Think about who took part in the study, the length of the study, and what the participants in the study did. Also, couldthe researchers be biased toward getting a particular outcome? Remember, thisis where critical thinking comes into play. Show me you have understood and cancritically respond to what you’ve read.       3.  What could have made the study better? Morepeople? Length? Methods? Be specific.       4.  Do you think the conclusion (look at the title ofthe article) of the author who wrote the article is misleading to the reader?Do they read more into the study than even the researchers? What effect couldthis have on people reading the article and making decisions aboutlifestyle?       5.  If you were writing a paper about this topic, would you be compelled to use this research as a reason to support yourargument?  Why or why not?Response      1.  After reading the article, what do you think about this issue? Thisis where you give your conclusion and reasons why you feel that way. Thinkabout your own value assumptions and how that might drive your thinking. Wouldthis research compel you to make changes in your life, or does it support whatyou already do, or possibly someone you know or have read about?  Try tomake a connection in some way – were you or someone you know in a situationrelated to this issue? Describe it. Or maybe another story in the news is likethe issue.
