Myth

For your wiki contribution this week, you will return to the page you created and have been editing. Think carefully about the myth that you have selected and explored in the past several weeks. Now retell the myth in terms that use the language and terminology of psychology, religion, or science. This is not meant to test your expertise in the language or discourse of psychology, for example, but rather your ability to reframe the myth in another way of knowing, which is a function of knowing the myth intimately.

Apache Creation Story

In Native American narratives and poetry, creation myths are common as they help people make sense of the universe around them. Certainly different tribes have their own specific creation myths that have been handed down through oral narrative; however, there are common elements to these myths.  There is typically some description of the Earth as being “empty” (which is somewhat ironic given that the characters in the myths are situated in some place before the creation), then a series of events causes the Earth to come into being via the creation of the geographical landscape. Often, personified animals are used as characters and can be interpreted as being representative of the creation of human beings.

For my first wiki post I have chosen to write about the Apache Creation Story. After thinking long and hard about what to do for this assignment I decided to write about a story from my ancestry. The story starts at the beginning of time when there was no earth, moon, or stars. Here is a few words from the opening lines of the story to give you an idea of how it begins:

Suddenly from the darkness emerged a thin disc, one side yellow and the other side white, appearing suspended in midair. Within the disc sat a small bearded man, Creator, the One Who Lives Above. As if waking from a long nap, he rubbed his eyes and face with both hands. When he looked into the endless darkness, light appeared above. He looked down and it became a sea of light. To the east, he created yellow streaks of dawn. To the west, tints of many colours appeared everywhere. There were also clouds of different colours.”(http://www.indians.org/welker/creation.htm)

The story continues and a little girl is discovered she claims that she has came from the light; earth and she wants to know where it has went. The creator then claims that he plans on making it and says this 4 times and a small boy appears a sun-god.

“Then he created Tarantula, Big Dipper, Wind, Lightning-Maker, and some western clouds in which to house Lightning-Rumbler, which he just finished.Creator sang, “Let us make earth. I am thinking of the earth, earth, earth; I am thinking of the earth,” he sang four times. All four gods shook hands. In doing so, their sweat mixed together and Creator rubbed his palms, from which fell a small round, brown ball, not much larger than a bean. Creator kicked it, and it expanded. Girl-Without-Parents kicked the ball, and it enlarged more. Sun-God and Small-Boy took turns giving it hard kicks, and each time the ball expanded. Creator told Wind to go inside the ball and to blow it up. Tarantula spun a black cord and, attaching it to the ball, crawled away fast to the east, pulling on the cord with all his strength. Tarantula repeated with a blue cord to the south, a yellow cord to the west, and a white cord to the north. With mighty pulls in each direction, the brown ball stretched to immeasurable size–it became the earth! No hills, mountains, or rivers were visible; only smooth, treeless, brown plains appeared.” .”( http://www.indians.org/welker/creation.htm)

The creator then creates many different people to serve different purposes of creation throughout the world rain, sun, pollination, etc. This story then continues with a big storm appearing. The creator has created 28 people that he protects from this storm while the storm forms the earth mountains, hills, rivers, lakes oceans. At the end of this storm the world is ready the creator disappears and leaves his creations to run the world.

I find this and all stories of creation amazing. These civilizations are culture genuinely believed in this tale and what was said to have happened. These stories were a major part in their way of life. Even though we may listen to this story and find it silly others may think the same about are ideals.

 week 2

After reading this weeks content I found myself asking where does this myth fit in.Of course there is a mystical approach to this story. It all starts with the god who creates the worldsun, moon, stars, good, and bad. I guess it doesnt get more mystical then that. The cosmical approach to this story is very much similar to the mystical the creation of the world. This story is meant to give the apache people and understanding of how the world is created. By having belief in this story and those gods it gave them the motivation to accomplish the goals they needed to set to live life from day to day in their time. I belive there is a sociological and psychologial aspect to this story and all creation stories. These stories are made to ease people minds and keep them from wondering about the what ifs of the world it answers all their questions of how the world began and how it functions.

week 3

A myth is a story that may or may not be true explaining social and natural phenomenon, involving supernatural event or beings. There are various types of myths such as cosmic myths, hero myth, place and object myths and myths of Gods among others. Afer giving it much thought I think The Apache Creation myth is mosty a cosmic type of myth, also known as the creation myth. Even though I do agree as stated in week 2 it has the contents of every type of myth the greatest parts are cosmic. The cosmic myths explains how the world begun and how the human being came to occupy it (Leeming, 2010). In the second paragraph, the narrator says that in the beginning nothing existed, no earth, no sky, no sun, no moon and only darkness everywhere. He or she goes on explaining how “The ball” (earth) was created. The distinctive feature of cosmic myths is that they are sacred in nature.
