My Views on the Recent Presidential Elections

After a lengthy and hard period of campaigning that was characterized by innumerable political rallies, employment of billions of dollars in intense political advertising and significant posturing, the election is over and a desirable candidate has been chosen by the majority. Obama won and once more, the democrats have maintained the office. This was in line with the expectations of the political forecasts. Indeed, the fact that he defied all odds to be reelected back in office even when the country faces serious problems such as unemployment is commendable. It is historic and has never been experienced since the 1920s. Although the political environment remains the same; characterized by a house of representatives comprising of the republicans and a democratic senate, the president has a host of challenges to address during his second final term in office.

Seemingly, a significant percentage of his voters comprised of liberal Whites, the youth, persons from mixed race, and women. Most of these did not place undue emphasis on the achievement of the president; rather they admired his charismatic leadership. The fact that the president is visionary and had a great campaign team cannot be disputed. It emphasized on critical areas such as healthcare and promised to continue with the current reforms. Reportedly, a significant percentage of the voters voted him in because they were simply fond of him and wanted a leader who was representative of the nation. This can be used to explain why he garnered immense support from persons from mixed races and the youth.

Despite this competitive advantage, the president has performed well during his last term. Notably, he addressed critical economic, political and social concerns that the country was struggling with. His approach to terrorism and specifically, his killing of Osama demonstrated that he is capable of mobilizing resources and expertise to secure the world. His views on critical matters pertaining to immigration, gun control, and education indicate that he has the interests of the diverse American population at heart. In this respect, he approached the preceding concerns with the consideration that American interests are varied and all of these needed to be put in consideration. This was indeed a fair type of leadership that was not unnecessarily skewed. For this, he deserved to be elected back to office. Arguably, under similar circumstances, McCain could have attained similar achievements had he been elected in office four years ago.

In his second term, Obama is expected to be brave and approach issues more courageously than in his previous term. The main problem that he needs to address is the economic crisis that the country is currently grappling with. One of the steps that the government would need to take is to reduce its costs significantly. This would go a long way in curbing unemployment rates that threaten to hit eighteen percent. If left unchecked, this is likely to plunge the country into recession. The global economic implications of recession are massive and have direct negative effects on the quality of life of the American population.

Although the republicans were not happy with the election outcomes, they will need to support the government in achieving this goal. This is particularly so because of the fact that they have control over the lower house. Seemingly, the democrats occupy only 53 mandates in that senate. For this reason, both parties need to work together to achieve economic goals. Through these elections, the American population expressed their wish to have Obama go for the second term. Through it, they voiced their choice and support for the president. Nothing can be done to change this, but the president needs to focus more on addressing critical economic concerns that the country is struggling with.
