For this discussion assignment, you are to search for some scientific, news-worthy story of (a) microbe(s), and summarize the article. The story may be about viruses, bacteria, fungi, protists, and/or microscopic animals (tapeworms, roundworms, etc.). You will provide the title of the story, the author, source. its date, and the URL link. Shown below, I have summarized a story and provided to you an example of how to complete this assignment. You should utilize proper English and grammar.  Also, I expect a good summary will be multiple sentences (at least 1 paragraph), and not necessarily too brief.  Failure to provide everything requested here will result in less than full credit.

This article explains how important our domesticated pets and/or animals are to us as a source of probiotics.  Generally, in taking artificial probiotics, we ensure that our bodies maintain a source of “good bacteria” called normal microbiota.  This article suggests that our pets may be a wonderful source for these microbes.  We tend to overly clean and sanitize (mostly indoors) all aspects of our lives.  However, this prevents our immune systems from being exposed to all types of microbes (like viruses, bacteria, fungi, protists, etc.).  Without exposure to some microbes, our immune systems weaken, and many not recognize our normal microbiota from pathogenic microbes, and therefore, illnesses increase.  The article suggests that science continues to show that the microbes living in and on our domesticated animals provide huge benefits to us and our immune systems, especially when compared to humans that have no exposure to pets and other animals.  This is the example of how it is suppose to be done.

For this discussion assignment, you are to search for some scientific, news-worthy story of (a) microbe(s), and summarize the article, as explained in “Microbiology in the News – 1” discussion assignment.  The story may be about any type of microbes: viruses, bacteria, fungi protists, and/or microscopic animals, except a different story/article than before. As before, please provide the title of the story, the author, source, its date, and the link.  You may revisit “Microbiology in the News -1” to get additional details.  Remember to utilize proper grammar, and that a good summary should be multiple sentences (at least 1 paragraph), and not necessarily brief. Failure to provide everything requested in the discussion assignment will result in less than full credit.
