According to the study published in October 2014 by Medical Care found that with a 10% increase in BSN level of nurses on a hospital unit, patient mortality rates had decreased by 10.9%. This study, also found that increasing the care provided to patients by a BSN level nurse by 80% would also lower patient readmission rates and decreased patient length of stay in the hospital. With the decreases in mortality and patient readmissions, the cost for increasing the number of BSN prepared nurses would more than offset itself (AACN, 2015).

A study posted in the February 2013 issue of the Journal of Nursing Administration, analyzed the association between patient care outcomes and registered nurse education. In this study, it was found that hospitals who had a higher percentage of nurses with a BSN or higher education had many decreased rates in mortality. Mortality rates of patients hospitalized that were decreased due to increasing the number of higher educated nurses included; congestive heart failure, decubitus ulcers, failure to rescue, postop DVT, PE and shortened the length of hospital stays.

In my opinion, I believe that BSN level nurses can offer better care to their patients. The goal is for our patients to have the best outcome possible in the hospital setting. When nurses education levels are increased, we can better serve our community. One thing I have noticed during my BSN education is that I have more education being a leader and educating other nurses on care. This makes for a better experience for our patients (AACN, 20015). I would personally prefer to have someone taking care of me or my family members who has higher education.
