Paper Guide Line
For this project you have 2 options. You only have to do one option.
1.Research a famous mathematician.
2.Research a topic from the course.
You can do this project at any time in the course and it is worth 10% of your final grade.
Research a famous mathematician
Give a brief biographical essay of one mathematician. Your work should be approximately 1000 words long, that’s about 2 full pages of text, plus any diagrams and pictures you add. Therefore your essay will be at least 3 pages.
Some areas that you must try to include are:
dates and location of birth, key events, death
how did they die – (ie. was it related to their work)
their views of mathematics – (ie. what were their views on any controversies.)
what historical context did they live in – (ie. what was going on, war, etc.)
their religion, ethnic background, political ties
contributions to mathematics
contributions to society
their educational and family background
personality, interesting tales, photos
titles held, awards won, etc.
There are also marks available for: intro, conclusion, presentation, spelling, grammar and general rea-dability.
One guide for how to cite references in a bibliography can be found at: http://www.library.mun.ca/guides/howto/mla.php.

Choose an area from the course that interests you and research the history of that topic or part of a topic.
Some areas that you must try to include are:
Who the main mathematicians were who worked in this area.
Who discovered this area of mathematics
When was this topic discovered
Why was this topic discovered
